He stated that potential buyers should anticipate the Steam Machine's cost to closely align with what it would take to assemble a PC offering "basically the same level of performance" from individual components. Valve's ambition is to make the Steam Machine a "pretty good deal," aiming for a competitive edge within this price window. The company is actively refining its pricing strategy to achieve this goal.

Navigating External Market Pressures

Despite this clearer direction, Valve is not ready to disclose an exact price due to what Griffais termed "a lot of external things." These significant "external things" could include a range of economic factors currently impacting hardware manufacturing.

Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad noted that while external factors are challenging Valve, "the specs suggest Valve wanted this to be in line with PS5 pricing." Officially, Valve maintains its goal for the Steam Machine is simply to be "affordable" and priced "according to the value it offers."
