Melinoë gathering resources in the Underworld in Hades 2.

Supergiant Games' masterful sequel, Hades 2, launched into Early Access in May 2024, immediately enchanting players with its deep narrative, fluid combat, and expanded world. As Princess of the Underworld, Melinoë, you'll quickly find your inventory overflowing with a dizzying array of plants, seeds, ores, and essences. Mastering this complex economy of resources isn't just a side quest—it's the very core of your progression.

Efficient resource management is the key to unlocking Melinoë's true power. These materials are the lifeblood for brewing powerful Incantations at the cauldron, unlocking potent Arcana Cards, forging new Nocturnal Arms and their Aspects, and expanding the capabilities of your base at the Crossroads. This guide will demystify the entire system, detailing the essential gathering tools, the location of every crucial resource, and strategies to optimize your runs for maximum yield.

The Gathering Tools: Your Keys to the Underworld

Before you can harvest the Underworld's bounty, you need the right equipment. Shortly after starting your journey, you'll unlock the "Night's Craftwork" Incantation at Hecate's cauldron. Completing this (requiring one Moly) unlocks the Tool section of the training grounds, where you can craft and equip one of four crucial Gathering Tools before each run.

  • Crescent Pick: Your go-to for all things mineral. This pickaxe is used to mine ore and gem deposits, which appear as small, glittering rock formations. It's essential for gathering materials like Silver and Glassrock needed for weapon upgrades.
  • Silver Spade: For the aspiring botanist. The spade allows you to dig at disturbed patches of earth, unearthing valuable seeds and fungi. If you need ingredients for Incantations, this is often the tool you'll need.
  • Tablet of Peace: An unconventional tool for an unusual resource. The tablet is used to "compel" the wandering Lone Shades you encounter. Instead of fighting them, you can perform a brief mini-game to pacify them, earning a significant amount of Psyche in return.
  • Rod of Fishing: A returning favorite. The rod allows you to fish at designated sparkling spots that randomly appear in certain chambers. Each region has unique fish that can be traded with the Head Chef at the Crossroads for valuable Bones.

A Regional Guide to Underworld & Surface Resources

Knowing which tool to bring is only half the battle; you also need to know where to go. Each region in Hades 2 has a distinct set of resources. Before entering a chamber, look for a small resource icon next to the door's main reward symbol to see if a gathering point is guaranteed to spawn inside.

Region 1: Erebus

The starting biome is rich with foundational materials.

  • Moly: A small, golden-glowing plant. Picked up by hand. Essential for early Incantations.
  • Silver: Mined with the Crescent Pick. A critical early-game metal for weapon unlocks and upgrades.
  • Deathcap: Dug up with the Silver Spade. A mushroom needed for various concoctions.

Region 2: Oceanus

The watery depths offer unique flora and treasures.

  • Lotus: A pink flower found growing in the water. Picked up by hand.
  • Scallop: Found as interactive shells on the ground. Picked up by hand.
  • Driftwood: A key resource washed ashore in certain chambers. Picked up by hand.

Region 3: The Fields of Mourning

This expansive, sorrowful landscape holds resources vital for mid-game progression.

  • Wheat: Harvested from patches of farmland with the Silver Spade.
  • Glassrock: A jagged, crystalline mineral mined with the Crescent Pick.

Region 4: Tartarus

The deepest part of the Underworld guards rare and powerful materials.

  • Thalamus: A strange, brain-like plant grown in special plots, dug up with the Silver Spade.
  • Bronze: An essential metal for late-game upgrades, mined with the Crescent Pick.

The Surface Path: City of Ephyra & Rift of Thessaly

Once you break the ward on the Crossroads, you can venture upward to the mortal realm.

  • Myrtle: A leafy herb gathered with the Silver Spade in Ephyra.
  • Iron: A powerful metal mined with the Crescent Pick in the Rift of Thessaly.

Essential Currencies & How to Get Them

Beyond regional materials, several core currencies are fundamental to your progress.

  • Ashes: The primary resource for unlocking and upgrading Arcana Cards. Primarily found as chamber rewards, marked by a grey dust symbol.
  • Psyche: Used to increase your "Grasp," allowing you to equip more Arcana Cards. Primarily earned by using the Tablet of Peace on Lone Shades, but also found as a chamber reward (blue butterfly symbol).
  • Bones: A versatile currency used to trade with the Wretched Broker for other materials, healing items, or even Nectar. Earned as a common chamber reward and by trading fish.
  • Nectar: The classic ambrosia. Gift this to characters to deepen your relationships and receive powerful Keepsakes in return. Found as a rare chamber reward or purchased from the Broker.

Pro Tips for Optimizing Your Resource Runs

Mastering resource gathering means playing smarter, not just harder. Keep these strategies in mind to turn every run into a productive harvest.

  1. Prioritize Unlocking All Tools: Your first priority should be crafting all four Gathering Tools. This gives you the flexibility to target any resource you need on a given night.
  2. Cast "Reagent Sensing": Early on, you can perform an Incantation at the cauldron called "Reagent Sensing." This will cause a silver wisp to occasionally appear at the start of a chamber, guiding you directly to a resource gathering point.
  3. Read the Room (Rewards): Always pay attention to the icons on the doorways. If you're desperately low on Ashes, prioritize the path that guarantees them as a reward over one that offers a boon you don't need.
  4. Visit the Wretched Broker: Check the Broker's stock after every run. He often sells resources you need for Bones, allowing you to bypass a difficult gathering run.
  5. Don't Forget to Fish: Fishing spots are a fantastic source of Bones. The mini-game is quick, and the payoff from trading fish at the Crossroads commissary is always worth it.

By combining strategic preparation with a deep knowledge of the game's biomes and tools, you can transform the daunting task of resource gathering into a rewarding and efficient part of your journey to defy Chronos.
