Amazon MGM Studios is charting a new course for one of gaming's most iconic adventurers, and it has tapped a creative powerhouse to lead the expedition. Emmy-winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge, celebrated for her work on Fleabag and Killing Eve, has been confirmed as the writer and an executive producer for the highly anticipated live-action Tomb Raider series on Prime Video.

This announcement marks a monumental step in a landmark deal between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon to build an interconnected Tomb Raider universe, spanning television, film, and a new mainline video game. Waller-Bridge is set to pen the script for the series, which will serve as a cornerstone for this ambitious, cross-platform narrative.

Waller-Bridge Expresses Enthusiasm

"If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode," Waller-Bridge said in a statement. "Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats and all."

A New Direction for Lara Croft

Waller-Bridge's involvement signals a potentially transformative direction for Lara Croft. Known for crafting witty, complex, and deeply human female characters, her unique voice promises a portrayal of Lara that could delve deeper into the psyche of the brilliant and tenacious archaeologist than ever before. While past adaptations have focused heavily on action, Waller-Bridge's track record suggests the new series will offer a more nuanced exploration of Lara's motivations, vulnerabilities, and intelligence.

Who Will Be Lara Croft?

A key point of clarification for eager fans is that while Waller-Bridge is the creative mind behind the script, she has confirmed she will not be stepping into the lead role herself. The global search for the actress who will don the iconic boots and braid of Lara Croft is still underway, making it one of the most coveted and discussed roles in Hollywood.

Building a Cohesive Tomb Raider Universe

This series is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. The groundbreaking agreement with Amazon aims to create a cohesive universe similar to what Marvel has achieved. The narrative threads from Waller-Bridge's series are expected to connect with a new Tomb Raider feature film and the next-generation, multi-platform Tomb Raider game currently in development by Crystal Dynamics.

"Amazon Studios and Amazon Games are an incredible team with a reach across the globe, and we’re thrilled to be working with them on this next chapter for Lara Croft," said Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games. "Our new licensing agreement with Crystal Dynamics for Tomb Raider is a big step towards our goal of bringing players high-quality, long-running AAA games."

Key Executive Producers

The project is being executive produced by Waller-Bridge alongside Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt, as well as Dmitri M. Johnson from dj2 Entertainment, the production company with a proven track record in video game adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog.

A Bright Future for Lara Croft

With a visionary writer at the helm and the backing of a massive, multi-pronged franchise strategy, the future of Tomb Raider has never looked more exciting. While the world waits to see who will be cast as the next Lara Croft, the confirmation of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's creative leadership ensures that the upcoming series is poised to be a smart, thrilling, and definitive adaptation of a video game legend.
