What Are SHiFT Codes?
SHiFT codes are free, 25-character alphanumeric strings released by developer Gearbox Software as a way to reward the Borderlands community. These codes unlock a variety of in-game goodies that can give you a powerful edge, from high-end gear to unique character customizations that can't be found anywhere else.
The Loot: Understanding Your Rewards
The rewards from SHiFT codes can dramatically enhance your gameplay. Here’s what you can typically expect to unlock:
- Golden Keys: These are the most common reward and are incredibly valuable. Golden Keys unlock the golden Sanctuary Chest aboard your ship. This chest always contains a collection of Epic (purple) quality guns and gear that scale to your current character level.
- Diamond Keys: The rarest and most coveted prize. A Diamond Key grants you one-time access to the Diamond Armory on Sanctuary IV. Inside, you'll find a timed event where you can grab a full loadout of Legendary (orange) gear from the walls before claiming one final guaranteed Legendary item from the chest in the center.
- Cosmetic Items: Stand out from the crowd! Codes often unlock exclusive Vault Hunter heads, skins, weapon trinkets, and ECHO themes. Recent drops have included everything from holiday-themed items to unique skins for new Vault Hunters like Vex, often tied to events or new content drops like the recently announced "Bounty Pack."
Strategy: When Should You Use Your Keys?
A timeless debate in the Borderlands community is when to spend your precious keys.
- Using Keys While Leveling: If you hit a wall or find your gear is lagging, using a Golden Key can provide an immediate power boost to get you through a tough boss or area.
- Saving Keys for Max Level: The most popular strategy is to save your Golden and Diamond Keys until you reach the maximum character level. This ensures the gear you receive is endgame-ready and will last you much longer as you take on the toughest content in the galaxy.
Since Gearbox is consistently releasing new codes, our advice is to use a few to help you level up and save the bulk of them for when you hit the level cap.
Stay Ahead of the Hunt
New codes are released periodically, often without a set schedule. To catch them the moment they drop, keep an eye on the official Borderlands and Gearbox social media accounts, especially the Twitter account of Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. And of course, rely on this guide, as we’ll do the hunting for you. Happy looting, Vault Hunter
