Riot Games' sensation, Riftbound, the League of Legends trading card game, is barreling into 2026 with unprecedented momentum. Following an explosive late October 2025 launch that saw products vanish from shelves, the game's lead designer, Dave Guskin, sat down at PAX Unplugged to dissect its initial success, reveal an exclusive new Champion unit, and chart an ambitious five-year course for the rapidly growing TCG. Prepare for a deep dive into the upcoming Spiritforged expansion and the strategic vision shaping Riftbound's future.

Riftbound's Explosive Debut: Overcoming Initial Hurdles

Riftbound launched in late October 2025 to an "incredible fan reaction," quickly selling out its initial print runs of packs, themed decks, and the tutorial "Proving Grounds." The nascent competitive scene is already thriving, with national tournaments showcasing top Champions like Annie, Sett, Kai'sa, Ahri, and Teemo. Guskin acknowledged the primary challenge post-launch: meeting insatiable demand. He explained that the team "played it on the safe side" with print numbers to protect the game's long-term viability, a strategy that led to products selling out everywhere.

Addressing a reported issue of some packs containing only one rare card instead of the expected two, Guskin confirmed the team was "disheartened" but has since launched a "rare replacement pack" program for affected players. Despite these initial "speed bumps," Guskin expressed immense satisfaction with the diverse and powerful strategies players have discovered, praising the competitive "Nexus Nights" events at local game stores.

Spiritforged Unleashed: New Mechanics & Champion Debuts

PAX Unplugged served as the grand stage for the reveal of Spiritforged, Riftbound's second full set, slated for an early 2026 launch, specifically February 13, at local game stores and major retailers. This expansion is poised to introduce a wealth of new strategic depth:

  • 12 New Legend Cards: Expanding deck-building possibilities, including returning favorites like Ahri and exciting debuts such as Azir and Ezreal.
  • Key Mechanical Additions:
    • Equipment Cards: These powerful new permanents attach to friendly units, bestowing buffs and unique perks. Crucially, once attached, Equipment cannot be removed until the unit is defeated, creating compelling tactical decisions. Spells and other effects will offer ways to swap Equipment between units, adding another layer of complexity. Guskin noted Equipment was intentionally held back from Origins due to its intricate nature.
    • Repeat: A new keyword allowing players to double a spell's effects by paying its casting cost twice.
    • Gold Tokens: These versatile tokens can be tapped and sacrificed to generate one energy of any color, providing flexible resource acceleration reminiscent of Magic: The Gathering's Treasure tokens.

Guskin highlighted three Champions from Spiritforged with significant competitive potential: Ornn, who empowers gear-centric strategies; Lucian, fostering aggressive mobility-focused decks; and Ezreal, whose Legend ability allows players to draw a card by targeting an enemy unit twice in a turn, making him a tricky and rapid-reloading threat.

Exclusive Reveal: Azir, Sovereign Commands the Sands

In a monumental reveal, we can exclusively present Azir, Sovereign, the yellow Champion card that accompanies the new Azir, Emperor of the Sands Legend.

  • Cost: Four Power
  • Attack Strength: Four
  • Keyword: Accelerate (Pay an additional one Power and recycle a yellow rune to allow Azir, Sovereign to act immediately upon deployment).
  • Ability: "When I attack, you may move any number of token units to this battlefield."

Azir, Sovereign is a game-changer for token strategies, transforming a single attack into a coordinated assault by an entire army. Guskin emphasized its synergy with existing archetypes like Viktor, while noting Azir's broader utility with any token type. The presence of a Champion unit with Accelerate in the Champion Zone, Guskin explained, exerts constant pressure on opponents, forcing them to anticipate immediate threats from Azir and his accompanying tokens.

A Five-Year Vision: Riftbound's Ambitious Future

Despite Riftbound being in its infancy, Riot Games already has a robust roadmap in place. Guskin confirmed an ambitious plan to release four sets per year starting in 2026, a cadence targeted for the foreseeable future. "I have a very vague five-year plan for Riftbound, which is about 20 sets or so," Guskin stated, revealing that the first five to ten sets are already in various stages of development, from printing to initial conceptualization.

To ensure the competitive landscape remains fresh and manageable, Guskin outlined a clear rotation strategy for the "standard" format. The first rotation is planned for early 2028. After two full years of four sets each, alongside the Origins set (2025), the 10th set will trigger the rotation of the initial four to five sets. This will maintain a competitive environment of five to eight sets, a range Guskin believes is ideal for strategic depth without overwhelming complexity.

Riftbound is not just a game; it's a rapidly expanding universe, and with Spiritforged and a multi-year roadmap in sight, its reign in the TCG world is just beginning.
