• Cross-Platform Cloud Saves: X4: Foundations is finally getting unified Steam Cloud saves, allowing seamless progression between Windows and Linux systems.
  • Save Path Unification: Egosoft is updating the save system to use a single, Windows-like path in the Steam Cloud for both Linux and Windows files.
  • Linux User Action Required: Desktop Linux players *must* back up their save files and launch the game at least once after the update to upload existing saves to the new cloud location.
  • Steam Deck Integration: Currently using Proton for the Windows version, the Steam Deck will directly benefit from unified saves and is slated to eventually use the native Linux version of X4 by default.
  • Future-Proofing & QoL: This crucial change paves the way for improved Linux and Steam Deck support, enabling "a number of fixes and improvements" Egosoft has planned.

Heads up, X4 pilots! Egosoft is dropping a crucial update for X4: Foundations, finally bringing true cross-platform Steam Cloud saves to the expansive space sandbox. This is a massive quality-of-life win for commanders jumping between operating systems, but our dedicated desktop Linux players need to pay close attention to avoid potential save game breakage.

The Save Game Revolution

Previously, Steam Cloud acted like two separate storage lockers – one for Windows saves and one for Linux. This meant a save from your Windows rig wouldn't automatically sync to your Linux machine, forcing players into manual transfers or platform lock-in. For Steam Deck users, this meant syncing with a Windows PC, but not a native Linux setup, as the Deck defaults to the Windows version via Proton.

Egosoft is now unifying these paths. Both Linux and Windows save files will be stored in the Steam Cloud with a "Windows-like path." Don't fret about the technical jargon; upon syncing to your Linux machine, these paths will be automatically translated to the correct Linux location. This is a crucial step towards a truly platform-agnostic X4 experience.

A Word to Our Desktop Linux Commanders

Now, for our desktop Linux players, a word of caution from the developers themselves: you should absolutely make a backup of your save files. We can't stress this enough. Once the update is live, Egosoft suggests restarting Steam, loading X4, and then quitting. This process should move your existing Linux saves to the new, unified cloud location.

Your current save path on desktop Linux systems should typically be: ~/.config/EgoSoft/X4/

Remember, you'll need to launch the game at least once on Linux after the update so Steam can upload those existing files to the new cloud structure.

Impact on the Steam Deck and Beyond

For our Steam Deck brethren, this is also a net positive, streamlining that cross-device play. While the Deck currently runs the Windows version of X4 via Proton, this change means your saves will now sync seamlessly with any Linux-based machine. The long-term play here is even more exciting: Egosoft explicitly states this change is "an important step toward improving Linux and Steam Deck support for X4: Foundations (particularly, allowing us to use the native Linux version on the Steam Deck by default)." This sets the stage for the Deck to natively run the Linux version, which we expect will bring further performance and stability benefits down the line.

Beyond just saves, this update also "enable[s] a number of fixes and improvements that we’ve wanted to deliver for quite some time," according to the developers. So, expect more than just cloud save magic.
