The Dungeon Crawl: Preparation is Key

In No Rest for the Wicked, Moon Studios isn't handing out progress for free. If you’re looking to maximize your early-game efficiency in the Shallows, the Rusted Barnacle Key is a non-negotiable pickup. We’ve seen plenty of players wander into the dark unprepared—don't be that person. Before you hit the hatch next to the Saltborn Tower Whisper, make sure you've hit the level 8–10 bracket. If you’ve botched your stats, remember you can respec before committing to this run.

Lighting is your biggest hurdle here. We recommend swinging by the Blacksmith in Sacrament to grab a torch. If you're running a high-Int build with a staff or wand, a light rune or spell works just as well to keep the shadows at bay.

Locating the Rusted Barnacle Key

Once you’ve dropped through the hatch into the dungeon, the layout can be a bit of a maze if you aren't paying attention. You’ll need to descend to the bottom floor by navigating the stairs and platforms. Don’t just rush through; there are chests scattered throughout that drop Research Papers and Embers—essential materials for anyone looking to min-max their gear early on.

The Hidden Tunnel

When you reach the waterline at the bottom, head up the curved staircase. This path eventually leads down another set of stairs into a room packed with enemies and a locked door. The key isn't on a mob; it’s hidden in the environment. Look for a small tunnel tucked next to the staircase you just descended. Follow that tunnel into a side room, and you’ll find the Rusted Barnacle Key sitting right in the center.

Unlocking the Goods: Where to Use the Key

With the key in hand, backtrack to the main water area. You’re looking for a specific door marked by a single lit torch. Use the Rusted Barnacle Key here to gain access to a small loot room. While the item drops aren't a 100% guarantee every time, the chest inside is a reliable source for Embers and other high-utility loot. In a Soulslike where every resource counts, skipping this room is just leaving power on the table.

Veteran's Note on Loot

The RNG can be a bit fickle in these side rooms, but given the proximity to the Saltborn Tower, it's a low-effort, high-reward detour. If you're struggling with the enemies near the locked door, use the narrow tunnel to your advantage to bottleneck them. It's an old-school tactic that still works perfectly in this meta.
