AiAi Finally Hits the Grid
After a slight stall in the pits—AiAi was originally slated for a January debut—SEGA has finally delivered Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Free Update #5. For those of us who grew up chasing bananas in spheres, seeing the main monkey himself behind the wheel of the Banana Cruiser is a massive nostalgia win. Better yet, SEGA is sticking to its guns on guest character pricing; as with previous SEGA-owned cameos, this drop won’t cost you a dime.
We’ve been tracking the CrossWorlds post-launch support closely, and while the January delay was a bit of a letdown, the timing of this "Super Monkey Ball Festival" should help bridge the gap for the player base. However, there is a catch you need to plan for: World Match is going offline while the festival runs. If you were planning on grinding the standard ranked ladder this weekend, you’ll have to pivot to the event-specific tracks instead.
Roadmap Check: Tangle, Whisper, and Third-Party Heavy Hitters
The update video also gave us a refresher on what’s coming down the pipe. For the Sonic lore purists, Tangle and Whisper from the IDW comics are confirmed as the next two freebie additions. We think this is a smart play by SEGA—balancing the "legendary guest" slots with deep-cut characters that the core fandom has been begging for.
Premium DLC and Licensing Power
While the free updates keep the lights on, the real "meta" shift will likely come with the premium packs. The upcoming pipeline is stacked with heavy hitters:
- Mega Man: The Blue Bomber brings some Capcom flavor to the track.
- Nickelodeon Properties: Both the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar: The Last Airbender are confirmed for future premium DLC.
Our take? SEGA is clearly trying to turn CrossWorlds into a crossover hub that rivals the variety we see in titles like Fortnite or Brawlhalla. Whether this first "stint" of content is the end of the road remains to be seen, but for now, the engine still has plenty of gas. Get in there, grab AiAi, and make the most of the festival before the Banana Cruiser leaves the spotlight on February 15.
