The Missing Link: Where is Skate Mobile?
We’ve been hearing about the "no barriers" approach from Full Circle general manager Dan McCulloch since 2022. The dream was simple: crossplay and cross-progression across every screen you own. But as we barrel toward Season Three, that "seamless" mobile experience is looking more like a ghost. While you can currently shred on your PS5 or even an ROG Ally, the mobile version has gone completely dark.
If you scour the official website, the mobile port is non-existent. You have to dig into the FAQ to find a single note confirming that Android and iOS versions are "to follow later." Despite a tweet from the official Skate X account in September 2024 promising accessibility across PC, console, and mobile, the reality on the ground is much different. We know the build exists—playtests were happening as far back as February 2024—but the word from those breaking NDAs is that performance on handsets was, frankly, a mess. Since then? Radio silence.
Hardware Realities and Anti-Cheat Hurdles
Right now, the Skate experience is fragmented. If you’re a Windows handheld user, you’re in the clear; the ROG Ally handles the game just fine. However, Steam Deck users are still stuck on the sidelines. The culprit? Anti-cheat protocols that refuse to play nice with SteamOS. It’s a frustrating barrier for a game that claims it wants to be everywhere.
Interestingly, EA’s interest in mobile skating isn't new. Pro skater Jason Dill revealed on The Nine Club podcast that EA approached him back in 2020 for a mobile version of Skate 3. Dill famously told them to "make Skate f***ing 4 already." While we finally got our wish with the new Skate, the mobile execution seems to be stuck in the same development hell Dill was trying to avoid.
The Early Access Verdict: A Soul Search in San Vansterdam
Let’s talk about the game we actually have. After logging nearly 50 hours in the Early Access version that dropped in late 2025, the results are mixed. We’re still booting it up a few times a week, but it’s starting to feel like a sunk-cost fallacy. We’re chasing that classic Skate feel, but the game keeps getting in its own way.
San Vansterdam’s Identity Crisis
The new map, San Vansterdam, feels soulless. It lacks the gritty identity that made previous entries iconic. Full Circle has leaned so hard into making the city a "skater’s heaven" that they forgot to include any actual friction.
- No Security Guards: Remember the tension of Skate 2? It’s gone.
- No Railcaps: There's no environmental challenge to work around.
- M-Corp Mystery: In-game ads tease a villainous "M-Corp," but they don't actually exist on the map. There’s no physical threat or presence.
The "Wafer-Thin" Progression
The story quests are wafer-thin, serving as a backdrop for a "tiresome" amount of generic missions required just to progress. Then there’s the art style. It’s a jarring mix of realism and wacky, immersion-breaking cosmetics. The current "Battle Pass" is essentially a slideshow of generic clothing that we used to get as default unlocks in the older games. Season Three is supposed to address these gripes, but we’ll believe it when we see it.
The Expert Take: Is Mobile the Savior?
Despite the flaws, we still think Skate Mobile has massive potential. The "fix" for Skate’s current mission fatigue might actually be its portability. Diving in with a Backbone controller for a quick session on a train feels like a better use of time than grinding through generic missions on a 4K monitor. If Full Circle can get the performance up to scratch and finally deliver on the "no barriers" promise, it might just save the game's waning momentum. But until they break the silence, it’s just another "coming soon" on a long list of broken promises.
