A Retro Prequel No One Saw Coming

We’ve seen Kratos tear through pantheons in high-fidelity 3D for years, but God of War Sons of Sparta takes the Ghost of Sparta back to his roots—literally and stylistically. This newly released PS5 title is a 2D retro action-adventure that serves as a "God of War zero." Developed by Mega Cat Studios in tight collaboration with Santa Monica Studio (SMS), it’s a pixel-art extension of the franchise that focuses on the earliest days of Kratos’ life.

Our take? This is a massive swing for the franchise. We’re used to Kratos being an unstoppable force of rage, but Sons of Sparta introduces us to a version of the character we’ve never played: a devout, faith-filled boy who doesn’t even know he’s a demi-god yet. It’s a bold narrative choice that adds "texture" to his character that resonates all the way through his parenting style in the Norse saga.

The Long-Shot Pitch That Worked

Mega Cat Studios CEO James Deighan revealed that God of War was always at the top of their "wishlist" during leadership retreats, even though they ranked the probability of actually working on it as "very low." The team eventually took a "big swing," reaching out to Sony with a pitch for a prequel that reimagined what the series might have looked like on the original PlayStation. SMS was surprisingly open to the idea, seeing it as a way to explore the formative years of Kratos and his brother, Deimos.

Gameplay: Gifts of Olympus

Because this Kratos lacks his signature god-tier powers, the gameplay relies on "Gifts of Olympus." These are artifacts blessed by the gods that players use to navigate combat, solve puzzles, and explore the world. It’s a classic retro design hook that fits the 2D aesthetic while maintaining the DNA of the series.

Understanding the "Sons of Sparta"

Game Director Zack Manko noted that the title was chosen to encapsulate the core themes of brotherhood and the cost of the Spartan lifestyle. While there were jokes about naming it something "Greek yogurt themed," the final product is a serious look at Kratos and Deimos discovering what it means to be Spartan.

We believe the most interesting aspect here is the narrative bridge. By seeing Kratos as a boy, his later relationship with the gods—and his eventual journey as a father to Atreus—gains a new lens. It’s not just a side story; it’s foundational character work wrapped in a retro package.

Who is Mega Cat?

For those wondering about the studio’s name, it has nothing to do with gaming hardware (though they were often confused with Mad Catz in their early years). The name is a tribute to a rescue "bottle baby" kitten that Deighan took in during a period of pet-loss heartbreak. The runt of the litter, "Mega Cat," became the namesake for the studio that just managed to land one of the biggest IPs in gaming history.

Our Bottom Line

God of War Sons of Sparta is a rare example of a major publisher letting a smaller, specialized studio play in their sandbox. If you’re a fan of the Greek saga or want to see the "connective tissue" between Kratos’ youth and his time in Midgard, this is a must-play. It’s available now on PS5, and it’s a refreshing change of pace from the massive scale of the mainline titles.
