Arthurian Legend Meets London Underground

We’ve seen our fair share of bizarre marketing pivots, but Tides of Annihilation just took things to a different level. In a new promotional trailer celebrating the Lunar New Year, the game’s heroine, Gwendolyn, swaps the typical gritty Arthurian battlefield for the London Underground. While the Tube is usually the last place we’d want to celebrate anything, Gwendolyn manages to turn a missed train into a spectral event. After failing to catch her ride, she’s picked up by a special train pulled by three spectral horses—a heavy-handed but fun nod to the Year of the Horse.

Our take? It’s a bold aesthetic choice. Seeing a high-fidelity character model navigating the mundane reality of an Oyster Card gate is the kind of weirdness that sticks in your head. It shows a bit of personality from the dev team that we don't always get with these big-budget action titles.

Manage Your Expectations: This Isn't Gameplay

Before you get too excited about fighting bosses on the Jubilee line, keep your shirt on. Much like the viral Black Myth: Zhong Kui video we saw recently, this is purely a "fun promotional piece" meant to mark the holiday. We’ve seen these "seasonal" trailers become a trend lately, and while they show off the engine's capabilities and character designs, they don't reflect the final product's setting or mechanics. If you're looking for the actual meat of the game, you're better off looking back at the staggering PS5 boss fight footage that surfaced previously.

The Long Road to 2027

If you were hoping to get your hands on Tides of Annihilation anytime soon, it’s time for a reality check. There is currently no official release date, and we wouldn’t expect this one to hit shelves until at least 2027. We’ve seen this story before: a vertical slice or a high-end promo looks incredible, but the actual dev cycle for an "Arthurian Action" epic of this scale is a marathon, not a sprint. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Gwendolyn’s progress, but for now, this trailer is just a stylish distraction to keep the game in the conversation.
