Ambitious Witcher 3 Mod Restores Cut Catriona Plague Questline

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is famously dense with content, yet fans have long lamented that one of its most intriguing narrative threads—the Catriona Plague—was relegated to little more than background flavor in the final game. Now, a dedicated team of modders is working to change that with The WAR Project, an ambitious expansion mod that aims to fully realize the cut questline.

First uncovered by dataminers Moonknight, Ferroxius, Crygreg, and Glassfish in 2024, the project promises a 10-hour, 12-quest expansion. The mod is a significant undertaking, bringing back Iorveth, the fan-favorite elven rebel from The Witcher 2, who was notably absent from the third game's main release.

Expanding the Witcher 3 Experience

Beyond the return of Iorveth, The WAR Project seeks to deepen the game’s narrative connections. According to details shared by YouTuber and Witcher 3 specialist xLetalis, who is actively assisting in the mod's production, the expansion will feature a formal romance arc between Geralt and Ves. It also incorporates more demonic encounters involving Gaunter O’ Dimm, the primary antagonist of the Hearts of Stone expansion whom CD Projekt Red originally intended to weave into this specific plotline.

Players can also expect new mechanical challenges, including specialized Nilfgaardian soldiers sporting distinctive vulture masks and additional demonic enemy types to battle.

Development Status and Auditions

While fan-made projects of this scope often struggle to reach completion, the team behind this effort includes veterans like Moonknight and Glassfish, who previously contributed to the Brothers in Arms mod, which restored a darker ending to Hearts of Stone. The team reports the mod is currently 25% complete, with a demo already available on Nexus Mods that includes the implemented romance content.

The most pressing hurdle for the developers is voice acting, as the original voice files for these cut quests were lost. The team is currently holding casting calls for numerous roles in both English and Polish, including a search for a performer to take on the daunting task of voicing Geralt of Rivia. Those interested in contributing their own gravelly tones can apply for auditions through the mod's official Discord server.

The WAR Project is currently targeting a February 2027 release. While the scope of the project remains vast, the progress made so far suggests that fans of the series may finally get to see this "lost" chapter of the Northern Kingdoms brought to life.
