Donkey Kong 64 PC Port Team Calls Out Rival Project for 'Vibe Coding'

A new, fan-developed PC port of Donkey Kong 64 is currently in the works, and the team behind it is making it clear they want nothing to do with a competing project they claim is being developed with AI-assisted “vibe coding.”

On June 28, 2026, YouTuber 2dos released a trailer for Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled. The project is built using Wiseguy’s N64 recompilation tool, which translates the original game code into software capable of running natively on PC. The developers, who have a long history working on the Donkey Kong 64 Randomizer, stated they announced the project specifically to differentiate their work from a concurrent, lower-quality effort.

The Conflict Over 'Vibe Coding'

The term “vibe coding”—where developers rely on AI tools to generate or modify code rather than writing it manually—has become a point of contention in the recompilation community. One developer identified as theballaam96 addressed the situation on Reddit, stating, “We have a competitor who is vibe coding their way through, and doing a very poor job of it.”

According to the project’s Discord, the team decided to move forward with their own version to ensure a high-quality product is established before an inferior one gains traction. “Our DK64 recompilation project is backed by folks who have worked on and tinkered with the backend of the DK64 code for well over a decade, and do not rely on vibe coding to make code changes,” the developers noted.

Technical Improvements for PC

For players waiting to revisit the 1999 title, the Recompiled project aims to modernize the experience significantly. Key planned features include:

  • Widescreen support
  • High framerate options
  • 4K resolution support
  • Updated minigames for lagless gameplay
  • Extremely low input delay
  • Full mod support

As with other recent recompilation projects, DK64: Recompiled will not include any original assets from the N64 version. Players must provide their own copy of the game to use the tool, a requirement that has helped keep similar fan projects outside the reach of legal action from Nintendo.

The project is currently the only Donkey Kong 64 recompilation listed on the PC Gaming Wiki, which has implemented rules banning projects that rely on unreliable AI-generated code to prevent the site's list from being flooded with unstable ports.
