Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Warns of 'Crisis' Caused by Streamers

Following the major showcase at last week's Summer Game Fest, Square Enix has begun pulling back the curtain on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. While the final chapter of the remake trilogy has generated excitement—including confirmed plans for the iconic slap fight between Scarlet and Tifa and potential Dirge of Cerberus DLC—director Naoki Hamaguchi is using the platform to address a growing concern regarding the state of the RPG genre.
Speaking recently to 4Gamer, Hamaguchi explained that Revelation will offer significantly more player choice in story moments, minigames, and general content than its predecessors, Remake and Rebirth. This design shift is driven by a desire to combat what Hamaguchi describes as a “crisis for the work” created by the prevalence of gameplay livestreams.
“I'm not saying that all gameplay videos are bad,” Hamaguchi noted in the interview. “But if watching them makes people think, ‘What would I want to do?’ or ‘How could I try to figure it out?’ then they'll be more inclined to try it themselves.”
The Streaming Challenge for RPGs
Hamaguchi’s comments highlight a tension between the rise of streaming culture and the development of narrative-heavy titles. The director expressed that developers cannot “wholeheartedly rejoice” when viewers treat cutscene compilations or full playthroughs as a substitute for the actual experience. By focusing on player agency, the team behind Revelation aims to make the game feel like a personal journey that requires active participation, rather than a passive viewing experience.
While this issue is not exclusive to the Final Fantasy franchise, it is particularly acute for story-focused RPGs where the narrative is a primary draw. Hamaguchi’s strategy is a direct response to the fear that if players feel they have already “seen” the story via a creator’s stream, they may lose the motivation to engage with the game directly.
What to Expect from the Final Chapter
Beyond the philosophical approach to player agency, the team has confirmed several details that fans have been eager to hear:
- Expanded Content: Players can expect a higher degree of agency in how they approach minigames and content compared to previous entries.
- Fan-Favorite Moments: The team is committed to giving the slap fight between Scarlet and Tifa the “care that it deserves.”
- Post-Launch Potential: There is a possibility that Dirge of Cerberus content could arrive as DLC.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is currently slated for a multi-platform release across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch. As the final installment of the trilogy, the project aims to bridge the gap between the cinematic storytelling the series is known for and the interactive, player-driven experience required in the modern gaming landscape.
