Grand Theft Auto 6 Dominates PlayStation Store Pre-Order Charts

Grand Theft Auto 6 is officially the most anticipated title on the PlayStation Store. Since pre-orders went live on June 25, the game has climbed to the number one spot across nearly every regional version of Sony's digital storefront, including the US, UK, Japan, and major European territories.
Data shared by users on ResetEra and corroborated by Eurogamer confirms that the £90 ($100) Ultimate Edition is the most popular choice among players. While these rankings are calculated based on revenue—meaning games like Fortnite often share the top spots—the sheer volume of pre-orders for Rockstar Games' latest title has pushed it to the top of the charts worldwide.
There are notable exceptions to this digital dominance. The game does not appear on the PlayStation Stores in countries such as Kuwait and Taiwan, where it is currently banned. While similar data is not public for the Xbox platform, reports have suggested a significant disparity in sales volume between the two consoles, though Microsoft has denied claims that the title is selling eight times as many copies on PS5 compared to Xbox Series X/S.
The Shift to Digital-Only Physical Releases
A major talking point surrounding this launch is the lack of an actual disc in retail boxes. Physical copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 will instead ship with a simple code. Because digital and retail versions are priced identically and the retail box offers no resale value, millions of players have opted to purchase the digital version directly through the PlayStation Store.
Industry experts indicate that Rockstar’s decision to move away from physical media serves several strategic purposes. By eliminating the disc, the developer can more effectively prevent early leaks, ensure that second-hand sales are not a factor, and maintain full control over the game’s launch narrative.
Internal Challenges at Rockstar
As the November 19 release date approaches, tension remains high behind the scenes. Workers at Rockstar Games are currently attempting to secure company recognition for their union. This follows accusations of union-busting last year, when dozens of developers were fired shortly after participating in union talks. Rockstar has maintained that those terminations were due to gross misconduct.
Modern Warfare 4 and the Changing Xbox Strategy
While the industry remains focused on GTA 6, other major releases are navigating a shifting landscape. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, set to launch on October 23, is being marketed with a clear message: it will not be on Xbox Game Pass. Despite the success of Black Ops 6 on the subscription service in 2024, Xbox is leaning back into traditional premium sales models under CEO Asha Sharma.
To ensure the casual audience is aware of this change, official Call of Duty social media accounts have begun running targeted ads confirming the game’s absence from the Game Pass library. This move marks a significant departure from previous years of messaging, signaling a broader change in how Microsoft plans to handle its high-profile releases moving forward.
