Halo: Campaign Evolved Adds Third-Person Mode via Unlockable Skull

Halo Studios is shaking up the classic shooter experience with Halo: Campaign Evolved, which officially launched on July 28, 2026. While the title is already drawing praise for its respectful approach to the original art direction—using Unreal Engine 5 to enhance environments like the beaches of The Silent Cartographer without losing the series' identity—it is the new, optional third-person perspective that has players talking.
By finding and equipping a specific unlockable skull, players can switch the camera to a behind-the-shoulder perspective for the duration of the campaign. While some have jokingly pointed out that the camera angle makes the game feel akin to other third-party exclusives currently on PlayStation, the reality is that this addition is designed to boost replayability rather than fundamentally alter the game's core design.
Why a Third-Person Mode?
Halo has a long history of experimenting with camera shifts. From the very beginning, vehicles have been piloted in third-person to provide a better view of the surrounding chaos and avoid the motion sickness that a first-person cockpit view might induce. Similarly, Halo 3 previously allowed players to detach and carry heavy turrets, automatically pulling the camera out to showcase the Chief’s frame and the power of the weapon.
Halo: Campaign Evolved simply takes this established logic and applies it to the entire campaign. Halo Studios has implemented custom animations to ensure that Master Chief moves with appropriate grace, regardless of the camera angle. It is an optional way to experience the levels; if the perspective isn't to your liking, it can simply be ignored.
