Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot Adds Dappled Forest Biome and Poplar Trees

Mojang is wasting no time following the recent launch of Minecraft Java Edition 26.2 'Chaos Cubed'. On June 23rd, the developer pushed the first snapshot for version 26.3, offering a first look at upcoming features and balance adjustments as the team works toward a full release later this year.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Update: Minecraft 26.3 (Snapshot 1)
  • Key Addition: Dappled Forest Biome
  • New Flora: Poplar Trees, Red Shrubs, and Shelf Mushrooms
  • Expected Release: Q3 2026

The Dappled Forest and New Flora

The headline feature of this snapshot is the Dappled Forest, a new biome variation that generates near cold biomes. It brings a significant expansion to the game's vegetation, most notably through the addition of Poplar trees. These trees arrive with three distinct leaf color variations—red, orange, and yellow—each accompanied by matching falling leaf particles.

Players will also find the new Shelf Mushroom in these forests. These can be found on both standing and fallen Poplar trees, and they function similarly to other mushrooms for crafting stews. Interestingly, they also possess a bounciness when stepped on, complete with a unique sound effect, and can be grown into larger sizes using Bone Meal. Rounding out the new plant life is the Red Shrub, a decorative block that can be composted or propagated with Bone Meal.

Structures and Quality of Life Changes

Explorers have a new point of interest to look out for: the Abandoned Camp. These structures appear in a wide variety of biomes, ranging from Taigas and Swamps to the new Dappled Forest and Pale Garden. Each variant is designed to fit its specific biome and contains loot hidden within chests and barrels.

For builders, Mojang has finally added wool stairs and wool slabs for every color of wool block. These new variants retain the ability to dampen vibrations, just like their full-block counterparts. Additionally, minor tweaks have been made to existing mechanics: mushroom stews and suspicious stews can now be crafted using any two mushrooms, and sherds dropped from decorated pots will now retain their custom data, such as names.

The developers are aiming to have this update finalized by the end of September. This release also serves as a continuation of efforts to refine the game's multiplayer functionality, which saw the removal of peer-to-peer options in the 26.2 update while the team works on further improvements.
