Total War: Warhammer Getting Massive Chaos Endgame Overhaul

Endgame events have long been a highlight of the Total War experience. From the legendary Mongol and Timurid invasions of Medieval 2 to the original Total War: Warhammer, these moments provide the high-stakes narrative payoff that keeps a campaign feeling meaningful. However, for many long-time players, the Chaos threat in Warhammer has often felt like an exercise in grinding against endless doomstacks rather than a true, world-ending disaster.
That is set to change with the upcoming Lords of the End Times expansion. During a recent Total War livestream, developers revealed a complete overhaul of the Chaos invasion, turning Archaon into a genuine threat capable of reshaping the map.
A More Strategic Apocalypse
The updated invasion is designed to move away from simple combat attrition. Archaon will now possess a super-high ward save, rendering him effectively immortal until players take proactive measures. To stop the tide, you must weaken his host by defeating his armies or capturing a series of invasion fortresses scattered across the world map.
The threat is further amplified by the new devastation mechanic. As Chaos settlements despoil the land, entire regions will be transformed into blasted hellscapes. These areas will remain razed until Archaon is defeated, forcing players into a tense, strategic game of damage control as they fight to protect their borders while simultaneously scrambling to find a way to land a killing blow on the Everchosen.
Play as the End Times
Perhaps the most significant addition is the ability to trigger this crisis yourself. Upon completing Archaon’s short victory conditions, you can opt to initiate the endgame scenario. Playing as this force removes the ability to occupy territory; instead, you gain power by destroying regions and turning provinces into devastated zones.
Archaon will also gain the ability to confederate every Chaos and daemon faction by defeating their respective leaders in combat, mirroring the Norsca-style mechanics. Combined with visual updates for Archaon and the addition of Wrathmongers and Skullreapers to the Warriors of Chaos Warband system, the update aims to provide a more cohesive and threatening experience for those who prefer to play as the forces of ruin.
While an exact release date for Lords of the End Times has not been announced, the expansion is currently expected to arrive later in 2026. Along with the new invasion mechanics, the update will feature a rework for the Vampire Counts and introduce the Glottkin to the game's expansive roster.
