7 Ways to Make The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Feel Dangerous Again

Even after hundreds of hours, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild remains a staple of the Nintendo library. If you've already conquered the Master Quest and feel like the hero of Hyrule has become too powerful, you can bring the danger back with these seven self-imposed challenges.

1. Head Directly for the Final Boss

You don't need to follow the intended path. Once you touch down on the surface, head straight to Hyrule Castle. Without the armor, upgraded weapons, and restorative items gathered during a standard playthrough, you will be forced to scavenge for gear while facing enemies that can defeat you in a single hit.

2. Leave the Master Sword Behind

The Master Sword removes much of the game's tension because it recharges rather than breaking permanently. For a tougher experience, simply do not acquire it. Leaving the blade in the Lost Woods forces you to manage your weapon inventory and prepare for the reality that your gear will eventually shatter like glass.

3. Stop Cooking Hearty Meals

Hearty ingredients provide yellow heart containers that exceed your normal limit, effectively trivializing combat. To keep the stakes high, avoid cooking or consuming any meals that provide these temporary health boosts. It forces you to play more carefully, as you won't have an easy way to inflate your health bar during a boss fight.

4. Avoid Shrine Upgrades

Spirit Orbs allow you to trade for extra stamina or heart containers, making Link significantly more durable. If you want a leaner, more dangerous run, skip the statues of the goddess entirely. You can also choose to only upgrade one stat, such as stamina, to keep your health meter at a base level.

5. Travel on Foot or Horseback Only

The parasail is a convenient tool that makes crossing large distances effortless. By restricting its use to only moments where it is strictly required to progress, you force yourself to traverse the terrain on foot or horseback. This makes travel more deliberate and puts you back in the path of enemy mobs you might have otherwise flown over.

6. Disable the Map HUD

Turning off the map HUD forces you to navigate using actual landmarks. Without the constant guidance of a mini-map, you’ll find yourself relying on your surroundings to find villages or shrines, which makes the world feel much larger and more unpredictable.

7. Turn Off Champion Abilities

Champion abilities like Mipha’s Grace and Daruk’s Protection act as safety nets that remove much of the risk from combat. You can disable these in the menu to ensure that every mistake carries a real penalty, making encounters with bosses and high-level enemies feel as perilous as they were during your very first run.
