Are GTA 6 Screenshots Running in Real-Time on PS5?

If you have been following the industry for a long time, you are likely familiar with the term 'bullshots.' While the phrase has fallen out of common usage, it refers to screenshots that have been polished or touched up after the fact to obscure the aliasing and inconsistencies of the actual product. In the PlayStation 3 era, developers frequently rendered images at much higher resolutions than the hardware could handle in real-time.

Now, tech experts at Digital Foundry are questioning whether Rockstar Games is employing similar tactics with the latest batch of 63 GTA 6 screenshots. While the visuals are undeniably impressive, the technical analysis suggests they may not reflect the actual experience of playing the game on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.

The Case Against Real-Time Performance

In its recent analysis of the latest Grand Theft Auto VI reveal, Digital Foundry stated: "To be clear, we find it unlikely that these are real-time results on PS5, Xbox Series X – or in the best case on console, PS5 Pro. We’d like to be pleasantly surprised of course, and this will be firmly answered once it releases."

The experts point to two primary factors that cast doubt on the authenticity of the shots as real-time gameplay: a level of image quality suggesting native 4K resolution (or higher) and lighting inconsistencies on foreground characters that appear difficult to achieve on current console hardware.

Advanced Ray Tracing and Reflections

Beyond the resolution, it is the sophisticated use of ray tracing that has raised eyebrows. The imagery shows a level of density in windows, puddles, and reflective surfaces that exceeds the standard screen-space reflections (SSR) typically seen in PlayStation 5 titles.

Standard SSR works by reflecting details already visible on the screen, which often leads to inaccuracies or strange pop-in when objects reflect things the player cannot see. The depth shown in these new screens suggests a more robust ray-tracing implementation that goes far beyond what is standard in current-generation console gaming.

While we won't know for certain how the final product performs until it releases on November 19, 2026, the current consensus from those analyzing the technical output is to temper expectations regarding the fidelity seen in these promotional images.
