Classic Spyro the Dragon Is Coming to PC via Fan-Made Decompilation

The Spyro the Dragon fandom is having a banner year. Between the recent announcement of a brand-new series entry and a surge of interest in classic titles, the community is currently riding a wave of momentum. Now, that energy is being directed toward a new fan-made PC port of the original 1998 PlayStation classic, promising to bring the game to Windows 11 with a suite of modern technical upgrades.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Project: Native Spyro 1 PC port
  • Technology: OpenPETE decomp/recomp hybrid
  • Key Features: 60fps, true widescreen, perspective correct textures
  • Status: Not yet public; testing currently underway

A Modern Take on the Original Experience

The port is being built using the new OpenPETE decompilation and recompilation hybrid by developers Amec and tyscorp. According to footage provided by speedrunner lumilaura, who has been testing an early version of the build, the game runs natively on Windows 11 with significant visual improvements. These include 60fps gameplay, true widescreen support, the removal of the original game's trademark polygon wobble, and perspective-correct textures.

Unlike some recent fan projects that rely on AI-assisted tools, the developers have confirmed this port is being created with "no AI." Furthermore, it aims to maintain the integrity of the original release. Lumilaura notes that the port "runs 1:1 with console behind the scenes," meaning all the specific tricks and glitches utilized by the speedrunning community remain intact.

The Future of the Spyro PC Port

While the current project is limited to the first Spyro the Dragon, the developers suggest that the architecture is flexible enough that the two PS1 sequels could be supported in the future. For players seeking a modern visual experience, the official Reignited Trilogy remains an option, though this decompilation project offers a fundamentally different approach by keeping the "OG" feel of the original software.

This initiative follows the recent news regarding Spyro: A Realm Beyond, where developers credited the "loud and consistent" fans—who purchased 11 million copies of the remake—for helping bring the new game to life. With this PC port currently in the works, it appears the community's dedication to the franchise continues to pay off.
