Gears of War: E-Day Brings the Franchise Back to its Roots on October 6, 2026

Ten years after taking over the franchise from Epic Games, The Coalition is returning to the beginning. Gears of War: E-Day, officially set for release on October 6, 2026, on PC and Xbox Series X/S, is an attempt to recapture the intensity of the original trilogy while utilizing the technical power of Unreal Engine 5.
- Game Title: Gears of War: E-Day
- Developer: The Coalition
- Release Date: October 6, 2026
- Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S
- Engine: Unreal Engine 5
A Return to the Start
Creative director Matt Searcy describes the project as a "return to the roots" of the series, focusing on the day the Locust Horde first emerged from the ground. The game takes place entirely in the city of Kalona, following protagonists Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago over a three-day period. According to the studio, the goal is to depict a version of Sera at its darkest hour, where a civilization already worn down by the Pendulum Wars is suddenly pushed to the brink of collapse.
Studio brand director Nicole Fawcette clarified that the direction of E-Day is not a reaction to the reception of Gears 5. "We're making E-Day because we had an opportunity to make what we wanted to make," Fawcette stated. "We wanted to take on Emergence Day, and to have players rediscover Marcus and Dom, as we made the pivot to a new engine."
Rebuilding the Gears DNA
Unlike previous installments, Gears of War: E-Day was built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5. The team at The Coalition opted to start with an "empty hard drive," meaning no assets from previous titles were ported over. Every animation, sound, and mechanic has been recreated to support a new approach to the series' signature movement and cover systems.
The developers have introduced several quality-of-life adjustments to modernize the feel of the combat. Players will now be able to slide into cover, mantle into vertical positions, and experience a sprint camera that provides more environmental awareness. Despite these changes, art director Aryan Hanbeck emphasized that the team is working to maintain the "heaviness" of the soldiers while increasing overall fluidity.
Design Philosophy: Density Over Scale
A key difference between E-Day and Gears 5 lies in the scope and structure of the environment. The Coalition has moved away from the open-ended, vehicle-based exploration seen in their previous title, opting instead for a more linear, high-density experience.
"We have very classic mission design—especially on that first night, where you're fighting back-and-forth in the streets," Searcy explained. While the game is not open-world, it does feature larger combat arenas that offer players multiple ways to approach objectives. These sections are intended to provide a sense of choice, such as the option to assist civilians or other soldiers, without compromising the tight, claustrophobic atmosphere that defines the core Xbox flagship series.
