GTA 6 Physical Copies Won't Include a Disc, Rockstar Confirms

Rockstar Games has sparked a significant industry reaction after confirming that physical copies of Grand Theft Auto VI will not include a game disc. Instead, consumers purchasing the physical edition will receive a code to download the digital version of the game. This shift has prompted some retailers to drop the title entirely, though industry experts remain skeptical that the move will damage the game's commercial performance.

Analyst Perspective on Physical Media
Despite the high-profile controversy surrounding the lack of a disc for GTA 6, Mat Piscatella, a senior director and analyst at Circana, predicts the decision will not negatively impact Rockstar's sales. In fact, Piscatella notes that the move might even prove beneficial for retailers in certain contexts, even as the industry trends heavily toward digital distribution.
Curiously, the broader market for physical software has shown a rare moment of resilience. According to data shared by Piscatella, spending on physical video game releases in the United States grew by 3% for the 12-month period ending in May 2026. This marks the first time physical software spending has seen year-on-year growth since 2009.
The Long-Term Outlook for Discs
While the recent uptick in physical spending might look like a recovery, experts warn against interpreting it as a long-term reversal of fortune. Piscatella emphasizes that the overwhelming majority of game volume is now digital. The hardware landscape also reflects this shift: over half of all Xbox Series consoles in the US currently lack a physical disc drive, and more than a quarter of PlayStation 5 consoles are also digital-only.
"The second hand market... doesn't really matter," Piscatella stated on social media. "We likely have less than a decade left of physical software."
The decision to forgo a physical disc for Grand Theft Auto VI—a game expected to sell up to 30 million copies at launch—is likely to accelerate the decline of boxed games. This transition poses ongoing questions for players regarding the preservation of games, the ability to share titles, and the nature of ownership in a digital-first environment.
