Muramasa: The Demon Blade is Finally Coming to PC

Vanillaware’s library has long been a source of envy for the PC-only crowd. Fans on platforms like Bluesky and Dwitter have spent years pleading for titles like Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim to make the jump, but the studio’s output has remained stubbornly tied to consoles. This week, that changes: Muramasa: The Demon Blade is officially making its way to PC.

The announcement has sparked a larger conversation about the future of the studio's back catalog. James Mielke, author and founder of the indie game festival BitSummit, recently spoke with Vanillaware founder George Kamitani about why these titles have been absent from the PC platform. According to Mielke, Kamitani is clear on the matter: the studio wants to bring their games to PC, but they lack the authority to do so without publisher backing.

The Path to More PC Ports

"I asked Vanillaware’s George Kamitani why he hasn’t put his other games on PC and he said he totally wants to, but it’s up to the publisher to finance the ports," Mielke shared on Bluesky. "So if you want 13 Sentinels, Dragon's Crown, Unicorn Overlord, Odin Sphere etc. on PC, make some noise."

This clarification helps clear up industry confusion regarding the developer's stance. Previously, comments from publishers like Atlus—who noted that their agreement for Unicorn Overlord was strictly for a console release—led some to believe that Vanillaware itself was opposed to PC ports. Mielke addressed these rumors directly, stating that reports suggesting the developer didn't want their games on PC were simply incorrect.

How Fans Can Help

With the barrier clarified as one of publisher financing rather than developer intent, the path forward appears to be a matter of public interest. While Mielke advised against harassing companies with expletives on social media, he suggested that friendly, persistent inquiries directed at publishers could help demonstrate the demand for ports of titles like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

For now, the arrival of Muramasa: The Demon Blade on PC serves as a proof of concept. Whether the rest of the Vanillaware catalog follows suit depends on whether the community can successfully make enough noise to convince the respective publishers that a PC audience is waiting.
