The Great White Returns: A Cult Classic Reimagined

Most veteran gamers remember the NES Jaws tie-in for its "mixed reputation," which is a polite way of saying it was a brutally difficult, undercooked experience that many of us rented once and never touched again. However, Limited Run Games is betting on the fact that beneath the 8-bit frustration lay the bones of a solid RPG-lite loop. This week, we’re seeing if that potential can finally be realized as the shark bites back on PS5, Switch, and Steam.

We’ve seen plenty of lazy ports lately, but this isn't just a standard emulated dump. While you get the original 8-bit experience—complete with mandatory quality-of-life (QoL) upgrades like save states and rewind functionality—the real draw here is a massive new ROM hack dubbed the "Enhanced Edition."

Realizing the Role-Playing Roots

The original 1987 title had you sailing the ocean to level up your gear before a final showdown, a concept that was ahead of its time but poorly executed. According to the official press release, this new version aims to "realise" those original role-playing roots by introducing a "multi-chapter adventure with nods and homages to all four Jaws films."

New Content and Features:

  • Expanded Quests: New objectives and missions that flesh out the bare-bones original loop.
  • Expanded Arsenal: Players will be able to unlock new abilities and weapons specifically designed for this version.
  • Film Integration: Content isn't just limited to the first film; expect references spanning the entire franchise history.

Our Take: Is It Worth the Bait?

In our view, the original Jaws was a game with a "good idea behind it" that just didn't have the development time to cook properly. The addition of a new ROM hack that expands the scope is a game-changer for retro collectors. It’s rare to see a port go this far beyond a simple resolution bump. Whether the new content holds up remains to be seen, but for anyone who spent their childhood being terrorized by that 8-bit sprite, this is a "really fun little addition" to the digital library.

You can sink your teeth into this updated classic starting February 13th. We’re gonna need a bigger boat—or at least a bigger SSD.
