8 Elden Ring Bosses Who Are Actually Victims, Not Villains

Elden Ring features some of the deepest lore in the Soulslike genre. While it is easy to assume every boss standing between you and your goal is a villain, the truth is often much darker. Many of the game's most challenging encounters feature tragic figures who are victims of their world, their creators, or the political machinations of the Golden Order.

Here are eight bosses who aren't necessarily the villains of their own stories.

1. Mimic Tear: A Doomed Experiment

Created by the Eternal Cities of Nox to forge a powerful lord through replication rather than training, the Mimic Tear is a tragic artificial being. It never asked to be a tool for its creators, and its entire existence is defined by fulfilling their wishes. When you fight it, you are simply dismantling a manufactured entity that lacks control over its own life.

2. Spirit-Caller Snail: The Frightened Survivor

Perhaps the most sympathetic boss in the game, the Spirit-Caller Snail is not a malicious hunter. It spends the encounter running away and summoning minions only because you have invaded its home. It is a helpless creature trying to survive, and in this fight, the player is the aggressor.

3. Fire Giant: The Last Prisoner

As the final survivor of a race nearly exterminated by Queen Marika and the Golden Order, the Fire Giant has spent an eternity as a prisoner. Forced to guard the Forge of the Giants, he remains atop a frozen mountain surrounded by the corpses of his kin. He fights you only because he has been trapped in a cycle of duty he never chose.

4. Morgott, the Omen King: A Shunned Protector

Born as a cursed Omen, Morgott was confined to the Subterranean Shunning Grounds below Leyndell from birth. Despite being rejected and imprisoned by the Golden Order, he remained fiercely loyal to it. He spent his life defending a kingdom that never accepted him, acting as a guardian rather than a tyrant.

5. Ancestor Spirit: The Peaceful Guardian

The Ancestor Spirit is a sacred, peaceful being that resides in its resting place without any desire for power, war, or conquest. It poses no threat to the Lands Between until the player disturbs its peace. In this encounter, the player is arguably the villain, as they are hunting a creature that represents life and death.

6. Midra, Lord of the Frenzied Flame: A Tortured Soul

Featured in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, Midra was once a sage who tried to contain the Frenzied Flame to prevent it from consuming the world. For this attempt, the Hornset impaled him with the Greatsword of Damnation. He has endured unimaginable agony for centuries, existing in a state of perpetual torment.

7. Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon: A Broken Monarch

Rennala’s story is one of heartbreak. After being abandoned by Radagon, she spiraled into depression and lost the respect of her Academy. Her own followers eventually locked her away in the Grand Library. When you challenge her, you are fighting a woman who has been stripped of her status and abandoned by the person she loved.

8. Lichdragon Fortissax: A Loyal Friend

Fortissax and Godwyn once fought a brutal duel, but rather than killing the dragon, Godwyn chose to befriend him. When Godwyn was spiritually killed during the Night of the Black Knives, Fortissax fought the death within his friend’s body to try and save him. You are not fighting a monster; you are fighting a beast trying to rescue his dearest friend.
