Bandai Namco Entertainment has officially confirmed that Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve will take flight on October 2, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S. Developed by Project Aces, this latest entry in the long-running aerial combat franchise aims to deliver a more personal, cinematic experience than its predecessors.

During a recent hands-on preview at Summer Game Fest: Play Days, the game’s shift toward a first-person narrative structure was a primary focus. Unlike Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, which relied heavily on traditional cutscenes and briefing maps, Wings of Theve places the player directly into the role of the protagonist. This perspective is designed to deepen the emotional connection with squad members, such as the veteran pilot Professor and the spunky Tasha, as they interact directly with the player.

A New Narrative Focus

The story centers on the aircraft carrier Endurance, which is housing refugees following a major conflict. Players are tasked with protecting a fleet of civilian vessels, balancing the high-stakes combat typical of the series with intimate, character-driven moments. The narrative draws inspiration from a mix of Battlestar Galactica and Top Gun, featuring a hub-world style setup where players can interact with the crew on the flight deck and in briefing rooms.

The opening mission introduces Jan Cope, the original "Wings of Theve," a pilot whose status as a war propaganda figure makes him a primary target. His role as a narrator provides context to the world of Strangereal and the state of your squadron, even after his story arc concludes.

Visually, the game introduces advanced cloud-layer technology that impacts both the sense of speed and tactical navigation. Aircraft models demonstrate high fidelity, showing detailed wear and tear on the fuselages. While the game retains its approachable, arcade-style flight physics, it offers two distinct control models: a standard mode that keeps the aircraft level and an expert mode that allows for full, unrestricted movement.

Both the Standard and Deluxe editions are now available for pre-order on the Xbox Store. Both versions include the playable F-14A aircraft and a copy of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War for Xbox Series X|S. The Deluxe Edition adds a customizable cosmetic set, the PREMIUM ACE PASS PLUS, and three days of early access beginning September 28, 2026.
