Blizzard Reveals Shion, an Omnic Assassin Joining Overwatch

Whenever Blizzard unveils a new addition to the Overwatch roster, there is usually a singular, defining hook. For Genji, it was the cybernetic ninja aesthetic; for Wrecking Ball, it was a hamster piloting a mech. With the arrival of Shion as part of the game's ongoing Tokyo storyline, Blizzard is leaning into a different kind of fantasy: the high-octane, suit-wearing, pistol-wielding assassin.
"We knew in our heads that we wanted to do something along the lines of John Wick, Hard Boiled," lead hero producer Kenny Hudson explains during a recent press roundtable. The team wanted to capture the essence of a "cheesy action movie" and translate that energy into a playable kit. The resulting hero, Shion, is a dual-pistol-wielding flanker defined by her swagger, a signature explosive motorcycle, and a playstyle built around chaining action-movie set pieces into seamless combat combos.
A Performance of Identity
While Shion’s visual identity—tailored suits and high-speed chases—might suggest a human crime boss, lead narrative designer Miranda Moyer clarifies that she is, in fact, an omnic. This detail is central to her character arc within the current season's theme of uncovering the truth beneath social expectations.
"She's kind of putting on this performance of what it means to be a human as an omnic in this very human-heavy world," Moyer says.
The development team drew inspiration from various sources, including Yakuza films and the character of O-Ren Ishii from Kill Bill. According to Moyer, Shion carries the same "chip on her shoulder" regarding her past, which has evolved her into a battle-hardened survivor and crime boss. While the team hints that much of her history remains under wraps, she is positioned as one of the most narratively integrated heroes Blizzard has introduced to date.
Gameplay and Combat Flow
At the center of Shion’s kit is the goal of dynamic movement and rhythmic execution. Her semi-automatic pistols fire in bursts, and her "Evade" ability allows for rapid sideways dashes to boost survivability. The centerpiece of her kit, "Joyride," gives players the ability to use her motorcycle to engage, escape, or weaponize the vehicle itself by launching it into the opposing team.
- Hero Name: Shion
- Role: DPS
- Origin: Tokyo storyline
- Key Abilities: Evade (dash), Joyride (motorcycle)
- Classification: Omnic
Integrating a motorcycle into a standard hero shooter required more than just visual design; Hudson notes that the team had to invent new hitbox technology to make the vehicle function properly during team fights. The result is a hero that prioritizes "action" above all else, focusing on the satisfaction of acrobatics and precise gunplay.
Even the smaller details, such as her reload animation, were crafted to reflect her personality and backstory. By combining a high-fashion aesthetic with the mechanical reality of being an omnic, Blizzard aims to provide a hero that feels both familiar in her "John Wick" archetype and uniquely disruptive within the Overwatch universe.
