Crusader Kings 3: By God Alone DLC Launches September 30

Paradox Interactive is finally looking to deepen the spiritual side of Crusader Kings 3. Six years after the grand strategy title first launched, the developer has announced By God Alone, an upcoming expansion that promises to overhaul how faith and church authority function within the game.

As one of the two main pillars of the Chapter Five DLC rollout—the other being the merchant-republic-focused Silk and SilverBy God Alone aims to force rulers to navigate the complex relationship between earthly power and the church. While the update includes improvements to tenets and holy sites for various religions, there is a specific focus on the impact of Christianity throughout the medieval era.

Stepping into the Papacy

For those who prefer their power to be explicitly divine, the expansion introduces the ability to play as a theocracy. Taking control of a realm under an archbishop or the Pope offers players access to unique sources of wealth and influence. The update also brings back the College of Cardinals, a feature familiar to Crusader Kings 2 veterans, which allows secular rulers to attempt to manipulate church politics for their own gain.

Christian realms will also be subjected to a new persistent "Situation" that tracks the evolution of the faith. Starting a campaign in 867 means players must manage the rising tensions that historically led to the Great Schism of 1054. Whether you choose to follow that historical path or attempt to forge a different future for the Western Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodoxy is entirely up to you.

Faith, Heresy, and Consequences

The core tenet system is receiving a significant overhaul to tie character relationships more closely to their religious beliefs and "appropriate behavior." If your character strays too far from the expectations of their faith, they risk being branded a heretic. Paradox is also leaning into the psychological weight of these choices; living a life of sin can lead to increased stress, broken personal relationships, and deep-seated regret as your character approaches the end of their life.

Support systems are also being expanded to provide more depth to theological gameplay:

  • Monastic Holy Orders: Players can establish centers of theological power to gain potent bonuses.
  • Dynamic Holy Sites: These locations are no longer static and can evolve alongside the religion itself.
  • Clerical Puppets: Secular rulers gain new tools to install their own people in church positions, creating easier channels for political interaction.

Crusader Kings 3: By God Alone will be available on PC on September 30, 2026. It can be purchased as a standalone item or as part of the Chapter Five DLC bundle for $43.99 / £36.99. With Silk and Silver also expected by the end of 2026, Paradox is clearly aiming for a significant transformation of the Crusader Kings experience before the year concludes.
