Diablo Immortal’s New Warlock Class Arrives June 17

Blizzard is expanding the roster of Diablo Immortal this summer with the addition of its tenth playable class: the Warlock. Arriving on June 17 as part of the game's 5.0 update, the class is designed to break away from the traditional, passive summoner archetype found in many action RPGs.

  • Design Inspiration: Punk rock culture

A Shared Vision for the 30th Anniversary

The Warlock represents a unique collaborative effort for the Diablo franchise. Developed as part of the series' 30th anniversary, this is the first time Blizzard has launched the same class across Diablo 2: Resurrected, Diablo Immortal, and Diablo 4. While the teams worked together to establish visual motifs like chains, fire, and Vizjerei runes, the designers intentionally diverged on how the class feels in each title.

According to game designer Kyle Anderson, the goal was to show the evolution of the class over time. Diablo 2 features a Warlock just beginning to experiment with dark power, while Diablo 4 depicts a master of these forbidden arts. Diablo Immortal finds itself in the middle ground. Associate art director Emil Salim notes that this version of the character is "quite demented" with newfound power, yet they haven't fully mastered it, leading to a more chaotic and unpredictable combat experience.

Punk Rock Aesthetics and Aggressive Combat

Moving away from standard high-fantasy tropes, the art team looked toward punk rock culture for inspiration. By incorporating leather straps, spikes, and studded accessories into the game's medieval aesthetic, Blizzard aimed to create a character that is "unapologetically" evil. The result is arguably the darkest class introduced to Diablo Immortal to date.

The combat reflects this aggressive tone. Rather than relying on small, disposable summons, the Warlock commands a "posse" of massive, screen-filling demons. Central to this kit is the Soulgorger, a primary demon companion that follows the player and can consume other demons to absorb their traits. This mechanic keeps the player at the center of the action, actively managing their infernal squad rather than hiding behind them.

"We knew that we wanted ours to be a summoner," Anderson said. "But again, we wanted to focus on that chaotic, destructive, mad nature." With the Warlock, the developers are moving the class fantasy away from simple support roles and toward a more direct, "Hell obeys me" style of play that encourages players to embrace the darkness rather than fight against it.
