Fighting game pro Koustics disarms knife-wielding man at NYC cafe

Next time you see a streamer go AFK during a ranked match, consider that they might be handling more than just a bathroom break. Kofi “Koustics” Miller, a prominent figure in the fighting game community, found himself in a real-life combat situation on June 18 when he stepped away from a League of Legends stream to disarm an attacker at the OS NYC gaming lounge.
The incident began when a man, who was reportedly playing Apex Legends at the café, became agitated with the game and started breaking items. This behavior escalated into a confrontation with the staff, during which the man pulled out a knife. Koustics, who was streaming nearby, heard the commotion and intervened, helping to escort the individual out of the facility.
When the man attempted to force his way back into the lounge while still armed, the situation turned physical. Koustics utilized his background in sumo wrestling to take the man to the ground and held him in a chokehold until local law enforcement arrived. While the attacker fell on his own knife during the struggle, Koustics confirmed on his stream and via social media that no one else was harmed during the encounter.
A Stream Interrupted
Viewers watching the broadcast saw the exact moment the situation unfolded. Roughly 52 minutes into the stream, Koustics noticed the disturbance, set his headset down, and left his desk to assist the staff. He returned to his stream about 40 minutes later, visibly shaken but unharmed, sporting dried blood on his clothing from the scuffle.
Ever the competitor, Koustics joked to his friends, “I’m mad because this was supposed to be my rank-up game,” before adding, “Let’s go get this LP back.”
Reflecting on the incident later, Koustics emphasized the importance of perspective. “If you feel like a game is affecting you that much, you always have the choice to step away,” he said in a statement. “If the games are going that badly, then maybe try something less stressful.”
Known primarily for his commentary work on Dragon Ball FighterZ at major events like EVO and CEO, Koustics maintains a busy schedule outside of professional gaming. In addition to his competitive career and training in sumo, he works at a school in the Bronx where he teaches students the fundamentals of coding, robotics, and gaming.
