Grounded 2: Into the Abyss Update Launches August 11 on PS5 and Xbox

Grounded 2 is hitting a major milestone in its early access journey. On August 11, 2026, the game will launch on PlayStation 5, marking a significant expansion for the community. This release coincides with the arrival of the massive 'Into the Abyss' content update, which pushes the survival title to version 0.5.

For Obsidian Entertainment and Eidos Montreal, the release is viewed as a second launch. Chris Parker, the game director at Obsidian, noted that while the team navigated the initial early access hurdles, they are now focused on delivering their largest update to date. 'Into the Abyss' is set to be bigger than the previous Garden update, introducing the pond in Brookhollow Park as a primary area for exploration.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Update Name: Into the Abyss
  • Launch Date: August 11, 2026
  • New Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PC
  • Key Features: Pond exploration, new buggy, swimming mechanics, and Custom Game mode.

Expanding the Team and the Park

The collaboration between Obsidian and Eidos Montreal has evolved significantly over the past year. Parker shared that while the partnership had its share of creative friction during the early stages of development, the two teams have found a rhythm. 'Eidos comes and pitches something to us, like the story for the pond, and I will just plus-one that with them,' Parker explained. This cooperative approach is driving the development of the new regions and bosses found within the park.

The decision to bring the game to PS5 is a move the developers have wanted to make since the project's inception. Unlike the first game, which saw a delayed release on Sony's console, the team prioritized a broader launch for the sequel. 'Now we have our fingers crossed that PS5 players do want to come into the community,' Parker said. 'The Grounded 2 community is super healthy, so we're just excited.'

Roadmap and Community Feedback

While the team maintains a long-term vision for the size of Brookhollow Park and weapon tier progression, their immediate roadmap is heavily influenced by player requests. The return of the Custom Game mode in the 0.5 update serves as a direct result of community demand. Although the feature will launch in a less robust state than players might remember from the first game, the developers plan to build upon it over time.

The upcoming update also addresses mechanics that fans have been eager to see, specifically the return of swimming as a core gameplay experience. Alongside new underwater activities, players can look forward to a new buggy joining the roster. According to Parker, the team is currently taking existing systems—such as buggy progression—and using feedback to determine how far they should be expanded. While no 1.0 release date is set, the team expects to continue this development cycle through the 2027 calendar year.
