GTA 6 Delayed to November 2026: One Developer is Trying to Beat It

If you were expecting to play Grand Theft Auto VI this past May, you were likely disappointed by the news that Rockstar Games has pushed the release back to November 2026. The developer cited a need for additional time to ensure the game reaches the level of polish that players expect. While most of the gaming world has settled in to wait, one entrepreneur has decided to take a more unorthodox approach.

Ziwen, an AI start-up entrepreneur, has publicly announced his goal to "beat the real GTA 6 to launch" using a loop of AI agents. The project, which has been documented via social media, involves building game levels, lore, and mechanics with the help of AI tools. "Day 1 of building GTA 6. Still feels fake typing that out. Upgraded to Claude Max 20x just for this... No studio, no publisher. Just whoever shows up," Ziwen stated regarding the ambitious, if unconventional, venture.

Building a Game with AI Agents

The development process has been rapid and public. By day two, the project had moved from basic geometry to a 3D environment featuring downtown skyscrapers. Despite early struggles with jittery floors and placeholder assets, the project reached a significant milestone by day six, with the developer implementing a functional main menu, loading screens, and a fully wired front-end.

The technical limitations of the current development environment have become apparent, however. Ziwen noted that while the team has been using the Godot engine, it is beginning to show its limits for AAA-scale production. As a result, the project is shifting to test Unity to determine if it offers better support for the AI agents to autonomously read, edit, and push game assets.

The Current State of Development

As of mid-June 2026, the fan-led project has reached a point where it "boots like a real AAA game." Recent updates have included a reworked movement system, an intro cinematic, and the implementation of a "wasted" screen. While the project remains a far cry from the scope of Rockstar’s upcoming title, it represents an experimental look at what "vibe coding" and AI-assisted development can produce in a compressed timeframe.

For those awaiting the official title, the wait continues until November. In the meantime, the progress of this AI-driven experiment serves as a curious footnote to the highly anticipated arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
