Map Map – A game about Maps Review: A Unique Cartography Puzzle

I play a very specific role when I am out shopping with my family. I am the one who knows exactly where we are going after leaving a store, acting as the designated navigator while others wander aimlessly. I thought this spatial awareness would give me a massive advantage in Map Map – A game about Maps. Instead, I found myself just as lost as my family, constantly comparing the map to the world and coming up empty. Despite that, this is a title I would be proud to recommend.

A Triumph of Unique Mechanics

Map Map is triumphantly unique. It casts you as a cartographer for a group of children who feel like they’ve sailed straight out of Neverland. You arrive at an island with a map featuring nothing but squiggly lines representing the coastline. When a character asks you to locate a specific point of interest—like a tower or a flower—you must find it in the world and place a pin on your map. A star-ranking and a satisfying, falling arrow animation reveal just how accurate your guesswork really was.

The early game relies on simple squinting, but you quickly gain access to tools that add depth. You can count steps to measure distance or use calipers to triangulate your position based on multiple landmarks. It is a brilliant, puzzle-based approach that rewards precision. It feels like a minor miracle that no one has built a game around this concept before.

When the Tools Get Too Complicated

For the first three-quarters of the experience, I was completely hooked. You can approach objectives in many ways, and the freedom to annotate maps with crayons and pencils is a delight. However, the experience loses some of its shine toward the end. The game begins to favor "Floor is Lava" obstacle courses and building mechanics that feel disconnected from the core mapping loop. It felt like the game shifted focus to suit players who want to painstakingly finish every map, rather than those of us who just wanted to enjoy the core cartography missions.

The Verdict

Even with an uneven final act, Map Map is a game I would be proud to recommend. It forces you to visualize space in a way few games do, and it is filled with enough color and character to make the world feel alive. If you are looking for something that stretches your spatial muscles while providing an endearing story, this is a journey worth taking.
