Minecraft Dungeons 2 Launches September 29, 2026

After years of complex, dense action-RPGs dominating the market, Mojang is looking to offer a different kind of experience with Minecraft Dungeons 2. Arriving on September 29, 2026, the sequel aims to provide a more approachable take on the genre without sacrificing the depth that veteran players expect.
While the game maintains a pick-up-and-play simplicity, design director Laura de Llorens notes that players can still engage in deep customization. "We don't have set classes, but you can combine different items to create your own and make your own playstyle," she says. "So you'll be able to do plenty of min-maxing here, if that's what you like to engage in."
New Exploration and Combat Mechanics
Mojang has significantly expanded the scope of the world in this sequel. Creative director MÃ¥ns Olson describes the map as an interconnected overworld filled with collectibles and hidden talismans—a new item type that scales with player level. While the studio is avoiding the "open world" label, the playspace is designed to encourage more thorough exploration of the various dungeon depths.
The combat system has also received a refresh with the addition of a dedicated jump button. This allows for unique jump attacks that vary based on your equipped weapon type. Additionally, armor has been restructured into four distinct slots—head, chest, legs, and arms—to better align with the core Minecraft experience.
Perhaps the most significant quality-of-life improvement is the new mini-inventory system. Players can now press 'up' on the D-Pad to swap weapons or adjust items actively during combat, removing the need to pull the entire party into a pause menu.
The Deep Dark and Boss Challenges
Dungeon variety was a primary point of feedback for the original, and Mojang is addressing this by introducing new biomes, including the Deep Dark. This area features unique mobs and challenging boss encounters, such as the Twisted Warden. This particular boss is designed as a four-player encounter, requiring tight coordination to defeat.
Despite these improvements, the game still faces some hurdles. In chaotic combat scenarios, tracking your specific character remains difficult, and the new jump mechanic can occasionally make platforming distances tricky to judge. Mojang has several months before the launch to refine these pathfinding and tracking systems.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 arrives on September 29, 2026, for PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X.
