MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ Launches at $1,799 Amid Rising Component Costs

The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is now available for pre-order via the manufacturer's official website, sporting a $1,799 price tag. While the device carries a premium cost, MSI's product marketing lead, Andy Chu, has pointed to difficult industry conditions as the primary reason for the high barrier to entry.
In a recent conversation with FRVR, Chu explained that the company has struggled with rising prices for both storage and memory components, a trend that has impacted the broader Gaming Hardware sector throughout 2026. “We’ve done everything we can do to make our system as affordable as possible,” Chu stated. “But unfortunately, I think the situation, the result, is what you see right here. So, I would say, yes, it will be a tough year for us and for the gamers.”
Why the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ Commands a Premium
Despite the steep price, MSI believes the handheld fills a specific gap for power users. Chu noted that the device represents the first time a new handheld platform offers “zero compromise between the resolution and graphic settings and also the frames.” It is positioned as a niche device, targeting enthusiasts who prioritize raw performance over the price-to-performance ratios found in more mainstream alternatives.
The $1,799 launch price is not the only option available for consumers; the device is also currently listed at Best Buy for $1,699. Even at this reduced rate, it remains a significant investment compared to other portable consoles. For comparison, the recent crowdfunding campaign for the OneXPlayer X2 Mini Pro debuted with a starting price of $2,399, highlighting how competitive the high-end handheld market has become.
Shipping and Market Outlook
For those looking to secure the hardware, units are scheduled to begin shipping on June 23, 2026. With MSI indicating that further price fluctuations could occur due to ongoing industry instability, the company suggests that interested buyers should place their orders sooner rather than later.
The current hardware climate has already seen price increases for established devices like the Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go S. With a Nintendo Switch 2 price hike also expected this September, the industry is bracing for a sustained period of elevated costs for consumers.
