Ninja Theory Announces New Action-Adventure 'Senua' for 2027

Ninja Theory has officially unveiled its next project, a new action-adventure title simply titled Senua. Announced at the Xbox Games Showcase, the game is scheduled for a 2027 release and marks a departure from the Hellblade branding, signaling what the studio describes as a new saga for the character.
- Title: Senua
- Developer: Ninja Theory
- Release Window: 2027
- Platforms: Xbox Series X, PC, PlayStation 5
Studio head Dom Matthews noted that the decision to move away from the Hellblade name follows extensive feedback regarding Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. While players praised the atmosphere and tone, many requested more depth in terms of gameplay and player agency. In response, Ninja Theory has shifted its internal structure, moving the entire team onto this single production—a resource consolidation not seen at the studio since 2013’s DmC: Devil May Cry.
Expanding Combat and Exploration
The team is aiming to provide a more rounded experience by increasing the complexity of combat and environmental traversal. Unlike the more intimate, focused encounters of the past, Senua will feature larger groups of enemies and denser environments. Players will be able to utilize new mechanics, such as throwing axes looted from fallen monsters or dual-wielding the character's primary sword with a flaming torch.
Despite these additions, Ninja Theory is resisting the industry trend toward open-world design. Matthews described the game as a linear, narrative-driven experience set across a map that is twice the size of Hellblade 2, featuring interconnected locations. The studio is also leaning into its strength in motion capture and animation, focusing on fluid transitions between sword attacks, dashes, and parries, augmented by special Focus Abilities.
A Critical Moment for Ninja Theory
The announcement arrives at a testing time for the studio. Since being acquired by Xbox, Ninja Theory has released Bleeding Edge (2020) and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (2024). With new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma signaling a shift in strategy toward focusing on core, industry-defining franchises and restructuring internal systems, the pressure on Senua to perform is high.
While the studio has historically maintained a reputation for high-quality, prestige titles, the industry landscape remains volatile. For now, Ninja Theory is focused on delivering a balanced action-adventure experience that the team believes will provide the agency and depth fans have been asking for. The game is currently in development for Xbox Series X, PC, and PlayStation 5.
