Retailer VGP Refuses to Stock GTA 6 Over 'Code-in-Box' Release

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI are officially live, but the launch is facing a wave of pushback. Beyond the controversy surrounding content being gated behind the game's Ultimate Edition, many players are frustrated by the revelation that the physical version of the game does not actually contain a disc.
Instead of a physical medium, Rockstar Games is shipping a box containing only a digital download code. This move has drawn sharp criticism from collectors and preservationists who argue that the product is essentially an empty plastic case. Some retailers are now taking a stand, refusing to carry the game entirely in protest of the decision.
VGP Takes a Stand Against Code-in-Box Releases
Video Games Plus (VGP), a North American independent retailer with nearly 40 years of experience, announced via Twitter that it will not be stocking GTA 6. The company, which prides itself on supporting the preservation of physical game ownership, made its position clear: it refuses to sell products that masquerade as physical releases while offering nothing but a download code.
“As part of that commitment, our company policy is that we do not carry physical products for video game consoles that contain only a digital download code,” VGP stated in their official announcement. “Based on the information currently available, the physical release of Grand Theft Auto VI for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is expected to be a code-in-box product. As a result, VGP will not be offering it for sale.”
While the industry has seen games arrive with required day-one downloads or specialized key cards in the past, VGP noted that these releases at least included the base software on a disc. Rockstar’s current strategy for GTA 6 aims to maintain a retail presence without the manufacturing costs of physical media, a decision that has alienated a portion of their core audience.
The Growing Disconnect Over Physical Media
The refusal from VGP has gained traction among gamers who are concerned about the future of physical ownership. While a single retailer opting out of the launch is unlikely to force a change in strategy for a blockbuster release, the move highlights a growing tension between major publishers and the segment of the player base that values tangible media.
Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. As the launch date approaches, it remains to be seen if other retailers will join VGP in boycotting the code-only physical release or if players will continue to express their dissatisfaction through lower pre-order numbers for the physical edition.
