Roblox Updates Algorithm to Prioritize Long-Term Adult Engagement

Roblox is recalibrating how it surfaces content, moving away from the viral, short-lived experiences that often dominate the platform. Chief Growth Officer John Ciancutti confirmed that a new recommendation algorithm is now live, specifically designed to help the platform’s increasingly mature user base find experiences with lasting depth.
The platform has long been home to rapid-fire trends and meme-heavy games that rely on immediate, superficial hooks. However, with a generation of users who grew up on the service now moving into adulthood, the company is looking to shift its ecosystem toward titles that keep players invested for weeks rather than hours. According to Ciancutti, previous iterations of the recommendation system overvalued short-term engagement, which often favored games with flashy thumbnails that lacked long-term substance.
Rewarding Retention Over Quick Clicks
The updated 'Recommended For You' system expands its data window from a seven-day view to a broader 28-day range. Under this new logic, the algorithm prioritizes core metrics like total playtime and the frequency with which a player returns to a game. Games that see players bounce after a single session will no longer be prioritized over those that successfully build a consistent, returning community.
This algorithm change arrives alongside financial incentives aimed at keeping older players on the platform. As of April, Roblox introduced a program that offers creators a 42% higher DevEx rate for spending generated by U.S. players aged 18 and up. By combining higher payouts for adult-targeted content with an algorithm that rewards long-term retention, the company aims to level the playing field for more complex, high-quality titles.
The Future of Roblox Content
While the platform is not turning its back on the accessible, quick-play favorites that built its popularity, the shift is expected to clear space for more substantial experiences. Titles like the PvPvE base-builder Fallen Survival, the fighter Dueling Grounds, and the action-adventure game Bloodlines are positioned as the types of experiences likely to benefit from the new discovery metrics.
To support this transition, Roblox plans to continue providing developers with detailed analytics, helping them identify where their games are succeeding and where they need to improve to better retain an adult audience. Whether these changes are enough to keep players from migrating to traditional titles on platforms like Steam remains to be seen, but the company is clearly betting that a more mature library will keep the next generation of Roblox users from logging off for good.
