Star Wars Eclipse Development 'Cannot Be Finished' Following Layoff Plans

The future of Star Wars Eclipse appears increasingly uncertain as developers at Quantic Dream warn that the project may be impossible to complete if current layoff plans proceed. This week, the French video game union STJV initiated a strike at the studio, specifically protesting an "internal reorganization" that threatens 115 staff positions.

Speaking to the French outlet Gamekult, a developer identified as Jules stated that the strike is a direct effort to save the high-profile Star Wars project. According to staff, the studio is already understaffed, and the loss of these 115 roles would cripple production. "We’re understaffed, like in many other companies in the sector, because bosses know very well that passion will lead people to crunch time and that games will eventually be released," Jules said. "But it’s impossible to run a sustainable industry like that."

Production Stalled During Lucasfilm Visit

The timing of the labor action is particularly notable, as it coincided with a visit from a representative of Lucasfilm Games, who had arrived to assess the progress of Star Wars Eclipse. Another developer, identified as Théo, emphasized that the project requires the full team to remain viable. "We absolutely need the 115 people who have been inactive (or almost) for a month already," Théo noted, pointing out that a full month of potential training on the project's specific development tools has already been lost.

Star Wars Eclipse was first revealed in 2021, but the studio has provided very little in the way of official updates since its announcement. While the game is set during the High Republic era and is expected to feature a narrative focused on multiple playable characters, public information remains scarce beyond a series of leaked images showing various alien species like Gungans and Rodians.

A History of Labor Concerns

This latest unrest adds to a difficult period for the studio. Quantic Dream has previously faced public accusations regarding abusive working conditions, allegations the company has denied. While the current status of the studio's internal culture remains unclear, the union’s call for a national industry strike highlights a growing friction between management and staff regarding the sustainability of the development process for major titles like Star Wars Eclipse.

As of late June 2026, the project remains in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, though its ultimate fate now appears tethered to the outcome of the ongoing labor dispute at the Quantic Dream offices.
