Stellaris: Nomads Expansion Adds Mobile Arkship Gameplay

Paradox Interactive has officially launched the latest expansion for its flagship grand strategy title, Stellaris: Nomads. This release marks a significant departure from the game's traditional mechanics, shifting the focus from static system expansion to a mobile, travel-heavy playstyle.
Rather than claiming systems or building stationary colonies, players can now lead civilizations that live entirely on massive, fully upgradable Arkships. These vessels serve as the capital, cradle, and primary fortress for the player's empire, replacing traditional planets. As these empires evolve, players can customize their Arkships with specialized modules and districts tailored for military, scientific, or civilian purposes.
- Developer: Paradox Interactive
- Platform: PC
- Expansion Price: $24.99 / £20.99 / €24.99
- Free Update: 4.4 'Pegasus'
New Gameplay Mechanics and Origins
The expansion introduces several systems to support a nomadic lifestyle. Players can construct Waystations to establish interstellar trade routes, allowing them to harvest resources simply by passing through specific areas. Additionally, a new contract system enables task-driven interactions with other empires to gain influence, resources, or favor.
Nomads also brings four distinct origins for players to choose from:
- Voidfarers: A streamlined, flexible start for standard nomadic journeys.
- Heirs of the Khan: A scenario where players act as the successor to a murdered leader, using trickery and bribery to survive until they can reclaim power.
- The Sacred Path: A spiritual odyssey that tasks players with guiding a fleet of pilgrims toward ancestral holy sites.
- Forever Cruise: A management-heavy origin focused on balancing the demands of a pampered elite against an overworked crew.
Late-Game Additions and Free Updates
For those reaching the later stages of a campaign, the expansion adds the "Stellar Canon," a megastructure upgrade that allows players to weaponize their energy stockpiles to strike enemy systems across the galaxy. The "Defender of the Galaxy" ambition also allows players to command specialized Hero Ships to combat existential threats.
Running in tandem with the Nomads launch is the free 4.4 'Pegasus' update. This patch introduces significant quality-of-life adjustments, most notably the ability to join or leave wars that are already in progress. The update also includes a rework of the situation log interface and improvements to the game's job systems and selection logic.
Stellaris, originally released in 2016, continues to receive updates on PC, with Nomads now available as a standalone purchase or through the Season 10 Expansion Pass. Those interested in the full list of technical fixes and balance changes can find them on the official Paradox forums.
