Blizzard Explains Why New Overwatch Hero Shion Looks So Human

Since the reveal of the latest Overwatch hero, Shion, the community has been buzzing about her striking design. Unlike previous Omnics such as Zenyatta or Bastion, Shion features a distinctly feminine, humanoid appearance that left many players questioning her origins. Blizzard Entertainment has finally pulled back the curtain on the lore behind her look.

During a recent interview, lead narrative designer Miranda Moyer confirmed that Shion is, in fact, an Omnic. However, she has undergone significant modifications to appear human. Moyer explained that this design choice is central to Shion’s backstory as a “survivor” who had to work her way to the top.

The Meaning Behind the Mask

The human-like face is not just an aesthetic choice; it is a literal mask. According to Moyer, this reflects Shion's internal struggle and her role as a performer in a world where Omnics are viewed through a specific lens. “The fact that it resembles this mask, I think really speaks to her character and the fact that she’s kind of putting on this performance of what it means to be a human,” Moyer said.

This design ties into the themes of Season 3, which focuses on characters uncovering their true identities beneath external expectations. While some characters like Mizuki were raised to believe that adopting a lethal persona is the only way to thrive, Shion’s story explores the negative extremes of choosing to hide behind a human facade.

Subverting Archetypes

The development team aimed to challenge traditional character tropes with Shion. By combining the archetype of a Yakuza boss with a female-presenting Omnic, the team sought to create a character that defies immediate expectations. Moyer noted that while the character's general demeanor—suits, motorcycles, and a pair of guns—draws inspiration from icons like John Wick, her specific identity as an Omnic in this world provides a unique layer of depth.

“I feel like Shion being a woman, being an Omnic in this world where Omnics are viewed a certain way, is something that really, really gave us a lot to dig into,” Moyer added.

Upcoming Narrative Connections

Players can expect to see these narrative threads weave into the ongoing Overwatch storyline, particularly as characters converge on Japan to rescue Genji. Moyer teased that Shion’s presence will create friction with characters like Ramattra, who holds strong opinions on the relationship between Omnics and humanity.

Interestingly, Shion’s interactions with other heroes also promise to be a highlight. Despite their previous conflicts, Shion displays a surprising affinity and playful “cutesy” dynamic toward Sojourn, subverting expectations of standard animosity. Players can experience these interactions for themselves when Shion joins the roster in the Season 3: Into the Tiger’s Den update tomorrow.
