Epic Games Announces Unreal Engine 6: AI, Verse, and Fortnite Integration

Epic Games has pulled back the curtain on its next major engine iteration, announcing that Unreal Engine 6 will focus heavily on generative AI, a new programming language, and a unified approach to the Fortnite ecosystem. The details, shared by Epic developer Marcus Wassmer, outline a significant shift in how the company expects developers to build for the future.

A Unified Engine Foundation

The most immediate change for studios will be the consolidation of the current Unreal Engine 5 and the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) into one single product. According to Epic, this is a substantial enough transition that it may require developers to relearn key workflows or consider alternative options like Godot. The goal is to move toward a more portable, standards-based framework where developers can choose to ship standalone titles, content for Fortnite, or both.

Verse and Open Standards

Central to this new architecture is Verse, a programming language built specifically to manage massive, persistent game worlds. Epic claims Verse simplifies development by handling concurrent runtime transactions and global state management automatically.

Epic is also pushing for greater openness. While existing standards like glTF will become first-class formats within the engine, Epic plans to release their own open specifications for Verse APIs and asset conventions that any studio can implement. As part of this push, Epic intends to make Fortnite cosmetics part of an open system, allowing external games to pull in those assets and letting third-party developers create outfits that function inside Fortnite.

Generative AI Integration

Generative AI will have a deep presence in the new engine. Wassmer noted that UE6 is designed to integrate LLMs and generative AI models—specifically mentioning Claude and Codex—to help creators build content faster while maintaining creative control. The engine will feature an open foundation, dubbed the "Unreal Engine 6 MCP," allowing developers to mix and match leading-edge models and build custom integrations directly into their pipelines.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Early Access: Late 2027
  • Full Release: 12–18 months after Early Access
  • Core Language: Verse
  • Key Features: Generative AI support, Scene Graph framework, open asset standards

For those tracking the industry, this is a clear move toward what Epic refers to as the "Epicverse." By shifting to a unified engine and opening up their internal cosmetic ecosystem, Epic is betting that the future of game development lies in interconnected, AI-assisted, and highly portable virtual environments.
