Ground Branch Hits 1.0 Milestone After Eight Years in Early Access

After nearly eight years in early access, the tactical shooter Ground Branch is finally hitting version 1.0. BlackFoot Studios, the developer led by original Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon artist John Sonedecker, confirmed the full release is scheduled for July 16, 2026.
The project has been in development in various forms since 2007. While a 2012 Kickstarter campaign fell short of its funding goals, the title maintained a dedicated following since arriving on Steam in 2018. With the shift to 1.0, the studio aims to deliver on its core promises while setting the stage for future content.
The Long-Awaited Campaign and New Extraction Mode
The most significant addition in the 1.0 update is the introduction of a campaign. Previously, the game relied on "Operations," a collection of disconnected missions. The new update brings those missions back alongside a fresh prologue designed to introduce players to the story, which will be expanded through forthcoming chapters.
Alongside the narrative content, Ground Branch is introducing an Extraction mode. Unlike the popular extraction shooters currently dominating the market, this mode focuses on precision: players must infiltrate a location, secure an AI hostage from enemy guards, and navigate them to safety. The stakes are high; if the team alerts the AI guards during the approach, the captors may execute the hostage, forcing players to prioritize stealth and coordination.
Refining the Tactical Experience
BlackFoot Studios is doubling down on the game's reputation for extreme realism. The announcement specifically highlights technical refinements, including a new, smoother, and more responsive door interaction system. These small-scale adjustments are intended to enhance the feel of the tactical movement that has defined the game’s niche appeal.
For those worried that 1.0 marks the end of the line, the developers clarified that the update is only the beginning of the next phase. Following the July 16 launch, the team intends to release additional single-player chapters and a mod kit, allowing the community to extend the game’s lifespan and content themselves. For players who have felt that major tactical shooters have drifted too far from the spirit of the original Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon titles, Ground Branch appears to be arriving at the perfect moment.
