GTA 6 Pre-orders Begin This Week: What We Know About Pricing

Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders go live this week, and with the June 25 launch date for reservations fast approaching, the industry is finally closing in on one of the biggest questions of the year: how much will Rockstar's latest open-world behemoth actually cost?

The anticipation has fueled plenty of speculation regarding the retail price. A recent leak originating from a European retailer suggested a base version of the game could arrive at €89.99 (roughly $100), with premium editions potentially reaching €199.99 ($227). However, those figures have since been debunked by a reliable insider, who dismissed the numbers as random placeholders rather than official pricing from publisher Take-Two Interactive.

The Analyst Perspective on Rockstar's Pricing Power

While the leaked figures lack official confirmation, industry analysts believe high pricing is within the realm of possibility. Speaking to Eurogamer, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella noted that the rumored prices are both "possible and plausible," stating that Take-Two is in a unique position where they could move forward with almost any pricing strategy for a title as significant as GTA 6.

Chris Dring of The Game Business echoed this sentiment, noting that while consumers are generally wary of high costs during a cost-of-living crisis, GTA 6 is an outlier. "Fans know the value offered by a GTA," Dring said. "This is a game that will last a long time and will justify that level of cost for a lot of people."

Strategic Considerations for Take-Two

Despite the game's massive production budget and its status as what Rockstar has dubbed "the largest game launch in history," there are strong arguments for keeping the base price closer to the current $70 retail standard. Dring points out that since the game is exclusive to current-gen consoles at launch, a lower price point could make the jump to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X hardware "more palatable" for players who have not yet upgraded from last-gen systems.

Rhys Elliott, an analyst at Alinea Analytics, highlighted the importance of the game's long-term ecosystem. "Capping GTA 6's addressable audience at launch to squeeze the base price would be penny-wise and pound-foolish," Elliott explained. "They'd needlessly be limiting the top of the funnel that feeds the thing that actually prints money for a decade." For Take-Two, that "money printer" is GTA Online, which remains the primary revenue driver for the franchise.

With pre-orders opening in just a couple of days, the official price tag will soon be public knowledge. Until then, the debate continues, though there is a clear hope among many observers that a $70 entry point will ensure the widest possible audience for what many consider to be the entertainment event of the century.
