How Many Pokémon Are Needed for a Living Pokédex in 2026?

If you truly want to "catch them all," simply filling the 1,025 slots in the national Pokédex doesn't actually paint the full picture. To build a complete Living Pokédex—a collection featuring one of every possible creature and variant stored in one place—you need to account for significantly more than the base number of species.

Because in-game storage systems are often limited, most trainers rely on Pokémon Home to house their collections. If you are aiming for a complete set in 2026, here is the breakdown of what that actually entails.

The Math Behind the Collection

While there are 1,025 species in the national Pokédex, a complete living dex contains 1,389 distinct entries. This surplus of over 350 creatures comes from the various permanent forms, regional variants, and specific patterns that Game Freak has introduced over the years.

Not every form counts, however. The general rule for a living dex is that the transformation must be permanent:

  • Temporary Transformations: Mega Evolutions, Dynamax forms, and temporary changes for Pokémon like Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Ogerpon, and Arceus do not count because they revert once the Pokémon is placed in your box.
  • Permanent Variants: Forms that remain when stored, such as the Incarnate and Therian Formes of the forces of nature (Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, and Enamorus), count as separate entries. Deoxys, for instance, requires four entries for its distinct forms.
  • Regional Species: There are 55 species with regional variants originating from Alola, Galar, Hisui, and Paldea that must be collected.
  • Pattern and Color Variations: These range from the 20 unique wing patterns of Vivillon to the 63 possible decoration combinations for Alcremie, and the six different Rotoms.

The Gender and Spinda Problem

Beyond the major variants, you must also consider gender differences. While some, like Pikachu’s heart-shaped tail or Wobbuffet’s lipstick, are distinct, others are notoriously subtle—such as the single-pixel dot on a female Torchic. These are technically required for a truly complete, exhaustive living dex.

Then there is the case of Spinda. While most collectors settle for the nine patterns found in Pokémon Go, the underlying code for Spinda generates unique spot patterns for every individual. If you were truly determined to catch every possible combination, you would need to find over 4.2 billion Spindas.

Is a Shiny Living Dex Worth It?

If you decide that a standard living dex isn't enough and you want to pursue a living shiny dex, your workload effectively doubles. The good news is that if you use the paid version of Pokémon Home, you have a storage capacity of up to 6,000 Pokémon, meaning you won't need to pay for additional storage to house your massive collection.
