Microsoft Considers Xbox Restructuring Amid Push for Faster Game Releases

Major changes could be on the horizon for the Xbox division. As rumors of mass layoffs circulate, reports suggest Microsoft is evaluating a significant business reorganization that would see Xbox transition into a separate subsidiary, potentially mirroring models like the joint venture between Ubisoft and Tencent that formed Vantage Studios.
According to The Information, this restructuring is being weighed alongside the possibility of establishing joint ventures with external partners. Microsoft already manages other entities, such as LinkedIn and GitHub, as wholly owned subsidiaries, providing a potential template for how they might oversee the gaming division moving forward.
Accelerating Franchise Development
Beyond the potential corporate shake-up, Microsoft’s leadership appears focused on resolving the lengthy development cycles that have plagued its flagship properties. CEO Satya Nadella and finance head Amy Hood have reportedly greenlit a proposal from Xbox boss Asha Sharma to increase investment in first-party development during the fiscal year starting in July.
The goal is to get new entries in Xbox's biggest series—specifically Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Halo—out the door more quickly. For Bethesda, the pivot back to its core RPG pillars comes after a long period of focusing on Starfield, while Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online continued to operate. While Starfield did not achieve the immediate, stratospheric success of its predecessors, the cost of that outcome has been exacerbated by the industry-wide trend of increasingly long development times.
The gap between major releases has become a point of concern. For comparison, Skyrim arrived less than six years after Oblivion, whereas more than 14 years have passed since the launch of Skyrim with no The Elder Scrolls 6 in sight.
The Risks of a Speedier Strategy
While the push for faster releases is meant to bolster Xbox's fortunes, it carries inherent risks. Rushing development to satisfy profit targets may not yield the desired results if the final product lacks the quality associated with these franchises. To date, Xbox has largely leaned into remasters—such as the recent return of Oblivion—rather than smaller spin-offs to fill the gaps in their release schedule.
Whether increasing development budgets will successfully translate into faster, high-quality releases remains the central question for the division as it navigates this period of internal transition.
