Path of Exile: Return of the Ancestors Event Combines Legacy Classes
Grinding Gear Games is bridging the gap until the arrival of PoE 3.29 in mid-July with a new, chaotic event for Path of Exile. Dubbed 'Return of the Ancestors,' this mini-league mashes together the squad-building mechanics of the 3.22 Trial of the Ancestors with the experimental, alternate class ancestries originally introduced in the February 2025 Legacy of Phrecia event.

Trial of the Ancestors Meets Phrecian Classes
The event reintroduces the autobattler-inspired tournament system where players hire and manage a squad of Karui warriors to compete in matches. This mechanic is now paired with the 19 Phrecian ascendancy classes—a set of "whacky" build options that were previously limited to the Legacy of Phrecia event. By replacing the standard character upgrade paths with these alternate options, the developer aims to create a highly unpredictable environment for players.
With the return of the Trial of the Ancestors, Tattoos are once again tied to that specific mechanic for the duration of the event rather than being available through Kingsmarch shipping. To support the new class-fusing potential, Grinding Gear Games is introducing new Tattoos, such as the 'Forbidden Tattoo of the Ranger.' This item grants a random notable from the Ranger ascendancy and is not class-restricted, allowing for cross-class combinations that were previously impossible.
Participation and Rewards
Because the event operates as a standalone experience, players will need to create a fresh character to join. While you cannot utilize the Reliquarian ascendancy from the currently active Mirage league—as it lacks a Phrecian counterpart—progress made in this event still counts toward any unfinished challenges from your current league.
Players who manage to complete act ten of the campaign during the event period will be rewarded with a Return of the Ancients Mystery Box. This box guarantees a unique prize, limited to one per account. The event is scheduled to launch on Thursday, June 25, at 3pm PT / 6pm ET / 11pm BST, and will conclude on July 16.
