Pokémon Pokopia Adds Underwater Bubbly Basin Biome This August

During the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, Koei Tecmo and Game Freak announced the first major post-launch content for Pokémon Pokopia. The update, titled Bubbly Basin, is set to arrive this August and introduces a significant change to how players traverse the world: the Dive move.

By using this new ability, players will be able to breathe underwater, effectively opening up the aquatic portions of the map. This expansion is expected to bring new discovery opportunities, including hidden items and specific Pokémon habitats that were previously unreachable.

Can We Expect Improvements to Underwater Gameplay?

While the addition of a new biome is a welcome expansion for the cozy sim, it faces the historical challenge of making underwater navigation feel fluid. In many titles, underwater segments are often plagued by restricted movement, time-limited oxygen mechanics, and obscured vision. Since Pokémon Pokopia focuses on a more relaxed experience, the implementation of these mechanics will be critical to ensuring the new area maintains the same quality as the base game.

The developer has confirmed that Dive will require PP to use, similar to existing traversal moves like Glide or Rollout. However, players are hoping that once activated, the move will allow for indefinite underwater exploration rather than forcing frequent trips to the surface for air, which would contrast sharply with the game's otherwise low-stress design.

Expanding Beyond Bubbly Basin

The Bubbly Basin update is widely speculated to be based on the Kanto region's Cerulean City, potentially incorporating iconic locations like routes 24 and 25, along with Bill’s house. Given that other major cities like Pewter, Saffron, and Vermilion are already present, fans are looking for this new region to be substantial in scope.

Beyond the new biome itself, there is a clear opportunity to revitalize existing areas. Locations such as Withered Wasteland, Bleak Beach, and Pallet Town are surrounded by water. Players are looking for reasons to utilize the Dive move in these older zones to prevent them from feeling like barren, static environments. Adding underwater caves and hidden habitats in these surrounding waters could provide the exploration depth the game needs.

Additionally, there is a community push for flexibility regarding which Pokémon can inhabit the new water-based zones. Players are hoping that non-water-type Pokémon will not be restricted from joining them in Bubbly Basin, allowing for more creative freedom when building out their habitats.
