Rockstar Confirms Grand Theft Auto VI Will Not Receive a Physical Disc

If you were holding out hope for a traditional physical copy of Grand Theft Auto VI, it is time to adjust your expectations. Following a confusing exchange with a customer, Rockstar Games has confirmed that its upcoming blockbuster will not be receiving a physical disc release.
Earlier this week, a Rockstar Support email appeared to suggest that fans would be able to acquire a physical copy in the months following the game’s November 19, 2026, launch. The message led many to believe that a disc-based version was planned for a later date. However, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, that correspondence was widely misconstrued.
A source with knowledge of the company's strategy confirmed that the support email was referring to the existing "code-in-a-box" physical product. The "following months" mentioned in the email described the window for pre-orders, not a secret timeline for a future disc release. Rockstar has explicitly stated it has no plans to print the game on disc, now or in the future.
The End of Physical Media for Rockstar?
The confirmation puts an end to speculation and leaves players with the reality of the current "code-in-a-box" strategy. This approach means the physical edition is effectively a digital voucher contained in a plastic case, leaving users without a traditional second-hand market and requiring a reliable internet connection to download the title.
Despite the backlash, the move has not slowed down the momentum for Grand Theft Auto VI. The code-in-a-box editions sold out on Amazon in less than five hours, signaling that demand remains high regardless of the format. Industry watchers are keeping a close eye on the situation, as GTA 6 is widely expected to set a standard that other publishers may follow.
Ultimate Edition Pricing and Reception
Format concerns aren't the only point of contention. The game's Ultimate Edition has faced criticism for a $20 price increase, which locks certain in-game stores and cosmetic items behind a $100 paywall. Many players have begun to view the more expensive version as the only "content complete" way to experience the game.
Despite these grievances, the appetite for the title remains massive. A recent survey conducted by IGN found that 70 percent of participants still intend to purchase the Ultimate Edition. While Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar continue to navigate these controversies, the sheer scale of anticipation suggests that Grand Theft Auto VI will be a dominant force when it arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X this November.
